Behind the Scenes with Europe’s CCS Experts: The Mission to Tackle Climate Change
As we approach the end of 2024, reflecting on the progress and challenges of the past year is not just a tradition—it’s an opportunity. Within the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) Joint Programme on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), progress is measured in the strength of connections, the clarity of purpose, and the advancement of solutions that tackle one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.
We’re revisiting the voices of some of our esteemed members, gathered during interviews in 2021 as part of the development of our flagship film (which you can check out at the bottom of this article). These perspectives illuminate the value of a collaborative European approach to CCS and remind us of the passion, dedication, and innovation that drive this community forward.
The Power of Collaboration
For Jonathan P. of the British Geological Survey , collaboration across borders has been transformative.
I’ve worked with colleagues from all European countries, from the north to the south, east to west,” he shared. “The joint program allows us to come together to tackle key questions, such as understanding how much CO₂ storage capacity is needed to meet Europe’s net-zero targets and where this storage will be located.
Pearce emphasized that the Joint Programme’s strength lies in its ability to unite diverse expertise.
“By speaking with one voice, we ensure that our research is useful, fit for purpose, and supports Europe’s decarbonization efforts.”
Similarly, Roland Span of Ruhr University Bochum highlighted the program’s role in reducing duplication and aligning research priorities.
“It’s only logical to work together on these topics. Research collaboration reduces double work and expenditures, making the alignment of efforts across Europe more effective.”
Driving Innovation for Impact
The work within EERA CCS is deeply impactful, tackling the complexities of CCS head-on. Ying Guo of NORCE Norwegian Research Centre underlined the importance of shared research infrastructure:
“Through EERA, we have access to common laboratory equipment and data, enabling better results and stronger collaboration.” Guo also highlighted the societal benefits, emphasizing the need for transparency and dialogue: “We should be more visible in discussions with citizens and policymakers, sharing facts about CCS’s feasibility and its potential to combat global warming.”
For Carlos Abanades of the The Spanish National Research Council ( CSIC ), the evolving role of CCS is clear.
“We’ve moved from focusing on decarbonizing the power sector to addressing carbon-intensive industries like cement and steel,” he explained. “Some emissions are unavoidable without CCS—it’s essential for reaching net-zero and beyond.”
A Vision for the Future
Looking forward, the development of a European CO₂ infrastructure remains a key challenge and opportunity. Marco Mazzotti of ETH Zürich noted,
“We need a Europe-wide network to connect CO₂ sources and storage sites. The systemic problems of integration must be solved holistically, and EERA CCS is well-placed to promote this effort at the political level.”
Others, like Jan Hopman and Filip Neele of TNO , underscored the importance of maintaining momentum.
“CCS is here today,” said Neele. “It’s a proven technology that can be deployed immediately to buy us time for more sustainable solutions.” Hopman added, “If we want to meet our climate goals, we need CCS—not just for reducing emissions but for achieving negative emissions, too.”
Reflections and Gratitude
As we close this chapter of 2024, these voices remind us of the dedication and resilience within the EERA CCS community. While some members have retired, such as Isabelle CZERNICHOWSKI-LAURIOL from BRGM and Marco Mazzotti, their contributions remain a cornerstone of our collective achievements. Their commitment continues to inspire our efforts to combat climate change.
To round off the year, we invite you to revisit our flagship film, which captures the spirit and ambition of EERA CCS.
As we look ahead to 2025, we remain united in our mission: to advance CCS research, foster collaboration, and bring effective solutions to the forefront of Europe’s decarbonization journey. To our members, partners, and supporters—thank you for your commitment. Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a bright, sustainable new year.
