Being authentically diplomatic - How it can benefit professional and personal life

Being authentic yet diplomatic involves striking a balance between honesty and sensitivity. One of my managers used to say that diplomacy is a misunderstood term and that it was misunderstood, to be a synonym of "people pleasing". According to him, diplomacy was an skill that could make people connect with others, understand values of self and others and skillfully navigate the communication towards a favorable outcome. Here are some strategies to achieve that:

1. Be clear about your values: Understand your core values and let them guide your decisions and interactions. Authenticity starts with self-awareness.

2. Tailor communication: Diplomacy means considering how your message will be received. Be direct but considerate, choosing words that maintain clarity without causing unnecessary friction. Let us assume you have a strong difference of opinion with a friend and you think of telling her directly. The alternative strategy would be to understand how she would receive your message, based on your previous experience and accordingly, you can think of choosing your words and statements carefully.

3. Listen actively: Show that you value others' perspectives by listening attentively. This fosters trust and encourages open dialogue, helping you navigate sensitive situations with diplomacy.

4. Stay calm under pressure: Authenticity doesn’t mean reacting impulsively. When situations are tense, take a moment to collect your thoughts before responding to avoid miscommunication.

5. Offer constructive feedback: Instead of criticizing, frame your feedback in a way that focuses on improvement and positive outcomes, which maintains honesty while being diplomatic.

6. Admit where you could have been better: There is no harm in admitting that you could have been better and that showcases your authenticity as a co-worker/friend.

7. Be transparent but tactful: When delivering difficult messages, be straightforward but mindful of how the information impacts others. Balance truthfulness with empathy.

By integrating these practices, you can remain true to yourself while fostering positive and respectful interactions at work. This is replicable in your personal life as well.
