Being the Best Parent for Your Young Athlete: Essential Tools for Supporting Your Swimmer's Success.

Being the Best Parent for Your Young Athlete: Essential Tools for Supporting Your Swimmer's Success.

As parents, we face a constant challenge: balancing our desire to equip our children with the tools they need to succeed, while ensuring we don’t cross the line and inadvertently cause harm. The path we walk as parents is a delicate one. This is especially true when it comes to nurturing young athletes. As much as we want to guide them, the reality is that we are not professionals in every area they face—especially in their sport. If we don’t approach it the right way, we risk doing more harm than good. That’s a responsibility that weighs heavily.

For me, this personal struggle has been magnified as the parent of a competitive swimmer. Early on, I thought I knew my child better than anyone. But when it comes to understanding his journey as a swimmer, I quickly realized that knowing my child as an athlete requires a much broader understanding of the challenges he will face. It’s not enough to just know him as my son—he needs support from someone who truly understands the world of competitive swimming.

I also realized that interfering with his coach’s role isn’t the answer. As much as I want to help, I’m not the expert in his training. So, how can I, as a parent, provide the best support in this world that I don’t fully understand?

The Ascent

That’s when I decided to seek out the best minds in the swimming world and harness their expertise. Because this isn’t just my challenge—it’s a challenge that every parent of a young athlete faces.

Three-quarters of a year ago, I set out to create The Ascent: A Parent’s Guide to Nurturing Young Swimmers, a comprehensive guide designed to help parents navigate this journey with the right tools and insights. This book isn’t just about understanding your swimmer’s physical training—it's about understanding how to support them holistically, from mental toughness to nutrition, to balancing school and swimming. Most importantly, it’s about giving parents the knowledge to help their children succeed in a sport we’re not necessarily experts in, but can still support in a way that matters.

I’m thrilled to announce that The Ascent is now available on Amazon!

This guide is a powerful resource for parents who want to offer the right kind of support—without overstepping—through the invaluable insights of 20 Olympic coaches, legendary swimmers, and leaders in the swimming industry.

If you're a parent of a young athlete, particularly a swimmer, or if you know other parents who are, you have the power to make a real impact. Start by being an effective role model for yourself, your child, and by empowering others along the way.
