Being Guided by Your Values
Have you ever been in a position where something doesn't feel right? Or have you ever felt torn between your professional responsibilities and personal principles? Perhaps you've resented a situation you've found yourself in at work, or felt out of sync with your team or company culture.
As I share in my latest Thriving Weekly coaching video, any of these situations could point to your working life not aligning with your values in life.
Your values are the deep-rooted principles and standards that shape your thoughts, actions, and decisions. Understanding and aligning your core values with your professional life can significantly enhance your wellbeing, performance, and overall career satisfaction. It's like finding the perfect career puzzle piece that fits who you are at your core.
Living a values-driven life isn't just a lofty ideal - it's a reality that can significantly improve your job satisfaction. Research has shown that individuals who align their work with their personal values experience higher levels of job satisfaction, reduced stress, and greater overall happiness. When your work environment and role reflect your values, you experience a sense of meaning and purpose that positively impacts your wellbeing.
To help you harness the power of your values in your career, here are practical steps you can take:
1. Identify your core values
Reflect on what's most important to you. Consider moments when you felt truly fulfilled and those when you felt significant discomfort. What values were being honoured or violated in these instances?
2. Align your career goals
Assess your current role and career path. Are they in sync with your values? If not, consider what changes might be needed to align your work with your core principles.
3. Make value-based decisions
When faced with tough choices, use your values as a compass. Ask yourself which option best reflects your core values and aligns with your long-term goals.
4. Communicate your values
Share your values with colleagues and managers. Being open about what matters to you can create a more supportive and understanding work environment.
5. Create a value-driven action plan
Set specific, actionable goals that reflect your values. For example, if one of your values is continuous learning, set a goal to attend professional development courses regularly.
Living and working in alignment with your values can transform your professional life, leading to greater satisfaction and wellbeing. By identifying your core values and ensuring they guide your career decisions, you can create a more meaningful and fulfilling work experience.
