What it means to power R&D for the world’s most innovative biotech companies

Today, Benchling was named to Fast Company’s annual list of the world’s Most Innovative Biotech Companies. Benchling unlocks the power of biotechnology with our R&D Cloud, the single source of truth for biotech R&D. Of the companies doing biotech-related work recognized on the list, we are ranked number six — and we are especially proud to be named alongside our customers at BridgeBio and Immunai.

Biotechnology is rewriting the way we live. In the last decade, the world got cheap and precise gene editing with CRISPR. We also saw the first approved cell therapies that remarkably eradicate cancer by supercharging the human immune system. The first lab-cultured meats were approved and are now widely available in stores. Most recently, new RNA medicines like the COVID vaccines have been administered to billions of people. This is an inflection point for biotechnology and the best is certainly yet to come.

Biotech may be radically transforming our world, but to move at the new speed of science, R&D needs better technology. The way we see it, we’re asking scientists to go from building bicycles to building jet planes, except their tools haven’t changed!

That’s where Benchling comes in. We develop modern software to accelerate modern science. Our R&D Cloud helps scientists centralize data, improve collaboration, and access insights, ultimately accelerating time to milestone and market for breakthrough products.

Every day, we’re inspired by the important work our customers are doing to transform industries across biopharma, agriculture, industrial materials, consumer packaged goods, and more. Here are just a few companies #BuiltOnBenchling that we’re honored to serve:

  • BridgeBio (ranked #10 in biotech by Fast Company in 2022) is developing breakthrough medicines for genetic diseases. With two FDA drug approvals in 2021, they were one of only four companies to have more than one approval, including for bile duct cancer and the first ever treatment for a rare disease called Molybdenum Cofactor Deficiency (MoCD) Type A.
  • Immunai (ranked #10 in artificial intelligence by Fast Company in 2022) is mapping the human immune system using single-cell genomics and AI. The Tel Aviv-based company has amassed the world’s largest atlas of single-cell immune data, and is using it to advance R&D for cancer cell therapies and vaccines.
  • Twist Bioscience (ranked #6 in biotech by Fast Company in 2021) is a synthetic biology and genomics company that has revolutionized the manufacturing of synthetic DNA, enabling the development of bioengineered products from vaccines to industrial chemicals.
  • Pivot Bio (ranked #9 in biotech by Fast Company in 2020) is transforming agriculture by replacing chemical fertilizer with a more sustainable alternative: engineered nitrogen-producing microbes that adhere to the roots of crops (like corn) and provide a reliable source of nutrition.

We truly believe that biotechnology is leading the most important scientific revolution since computing — and we cannot wait to see what our customers will accomplish. Congratulations to all the Fast Company 2022 Most Innovative Companies!
