Best Career Tips for 2023
It is a new year and a lot has changed in the workforce. What used to be an employer-powered workforce is now an employee-powered workforce. Employees have more leverage because they’ve learned their value and are no longer afraid to choose between doing work they love or a paycheck. Here are some ways to make sure this year you’re more intentional about leveraging the power you have.
Your Next Move
Too often we strive towards our dream role, but preparing for your next role is just as important. The way we climb a ladder is step-by-step, and although you may have your eyes on getting to the top, missing a step could cause you to fall. Each step and each role is significant to prepare you for succeeding when you get to the top. Try to be present in each role, learning all it has to teach you. Every position or project you complete will help you gain the knowledge you need to be your best when you get to your ultimate role.
Connecting
Being intentional about the people who are influencing your career decisions is a crucial part of reaching your goals. Write a list of three people you need to get to know this year. These three people should have skills and knowledge you do not have. Search for them within your network, your company, or through LinkedIn. The ones you choose should be able to add value to you and you must be able to add value to them. Often, we take unsolicited advice from people we know because it is convenient or circumstantial. When seeking advice, it is important to be intentional and know exactly what you need to know and you must trust that advice is coming from a qualified person.
Comp and Accomplishments
If you haven’t already, start writing down everything you do in excess of your work requirements. Going above and beyond shows your work ethic and also your desire to learn and grow. Learning new things, even if they don’t exactly align with the work you were hired to do, can still be a leveraging tool when negotiating your salary.
It is hard to remember or dig up information months or years down the road, so in addition to noting your excess work, take note of the outcome of your work. When seeking a higher salary, you’ll need to clearly articulate the outcome of your work because it shows a full picture of the value you bring and why investing in you is worth it.
