New (2024) student visa and related RESTRICTIONS in the UK and Canada have led to significant drops in attractiveness, applications, and/or approvals of visas. Many UK universities, for instance, have seen massive drops in applications, posing significant financial risks to them. A few are merging in efforts to survive. It's that bad. Foreign student fees constitute significant sources of university budgets. Foreign students pay several times the fees of locals. "Best" has to consider the student perspective. Countries that continue to beat war drums against foreign students will be less attractive, no matter what they offer. The full student experience includes STUDENT WORK EXPERIENCE opportunities during and POST COMPLETION. Restriction on these, and on traveling with family, seem myopic, and self-destructive. It is well established that foreign students are, in many advanced countries, major sources of talent and entrepreneurship to fuel innovation and growth in some leading industries and subject matter areas: science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), finance, banking, etc., etc.
