The best time to start a conversation is now. Family Tech Planner by Common Sense Media
As it is e-safety week at Repton Abu Dhabi, and with our school sharing valuable resources with parents this week, I thought it would be a good time to explain why Common Sense Media has created such a useful resource for all families.
It is important to note that almost everything related to family life involves some aspect of technology, from smartphones and tablets to gaming consoles and smart TVs—most children are surrounded by screens. The pressure of finding a balance between screen use and other important activities in family life is also a challenge that a lot of families face. This is where Common Sense Media's Family Tech Planner comes in; a valuable tool to underpin conversations between parents and children about responsible technology use at home.
Common Sense Media has created planners for three specific age groups: 2-8, 9-12, and teenagers. Each planner gives age-appropriate advice to help families manage technology at different stages of their children's development.
For example, the planner for 2-8 year-olds focuses on limiting screen use and balancing that with technology use by encouraging reading and family time. It does have some suggestions for adults such as talking to children about the content they are exposed to and setting an example of healthy screen habits..
The planner for 9-12 year-olds shows how to be kind within the digital world and face the more complex issues around online safety. It sets out clear rules to establish times that should be "screen-free," such as family meals or bedtime, and times when, and where, devices can be used by the collective decision of the family.
The teen planner introduces discussions on digital literacy and critical thinking. Teens are then called to ask themselves whether the content they encounter online is true, and whether their tech use is healthy - both mentally and physically.

Another important feature that runs through all the planners is the collaborative family approach. Instead of trying to lay down rules, the planner invites parents and children to come together and discuss what the expectations are, set boundaries, and establish shared goals in terms of technology use. This way, it gives children responsibility for their digital actions, building mutual respect between them and their parents.
The agnostic approach to which it invites families to reflect on their tech usage keeps the planner flexible. No family is alike, and in this planner, parents and their children can shape these guidelines to suit their needs and values. Whether updating screen use rules for different age brackets or establishing limits on the use of social networks, this planner can grow and evolve with your family.
Common Sense Media's Family Tech Planner is not about the rules set by parents but a collaborative tool that clears a way to communication and understanding between parents and their children. In fostering open discussions, shared decision-making, and activities together, the planner navigates the digital landscape a family has to undertake. It fosters the development of healthy technology habits that could enhance family relationships and better prepare children for being responsible digital citizens.
What better time to start this conversation than now...?
Wishing everyone at Repton Abu Dhabi a happy and safe week!
