The Oversea Approach
Here at Oversea we are well aware of the difficulties facing people who need to learn a language but have little time for studying. Whether they be group or individual courses, we pride ourselves on the quality of the teaching and the utility of the language taught. Our aim is to make lessons as enjoyable as possible, where the students are the real protagonists, and get them communicating in the language as quickly and fluently as possible.
As well as providing students with the linguistic skills they need, it is important to enable them to carry out the specific tasks their jobs require, which may vary from being able to negotiate in English to being able to send goods abroad, or may mean focusing on a specific area of vocabulary, such as Marketing or Finance. Using the Customer Needs form that each student fills in at the beginning of the course, Oversea staff work out a customised programme to ensure that the class is really working on the aspects that are important to them, and are getting the most from their English course. A number of hours are therefore allocated to this part of the programme.
The Oversea approach aims at increasing communicative skills through a variety of activities, but the most important is the direct contact the teacher has with the students. That is why a course at Oversea is totally student-centred. The teacher is always at the students’ disposal throughout the lesson, and no time is wasted on activities that the students may do at home. Communicative language activities have three main goals: productive (oral production = speaking, written production = writing), receptive (aural reception = listening, visual reception = reading, audio-visual reception) and interactive (oral and written interaction).
The main aim of a course is to get the students to speak the language that is as authentic as possible, losing the “scholastic” aspect that is often still present. In order to do this, it is necessary to eliminate any grammatical errors they are still making and also to increase their knowledge of phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions and business vocabulary in a specific context.
Here are some suggestions to follow if you want to meet your goal:
1. Speak English every day. The best way to learn any new language is to speak it. It doesn't matter if you do not know English; what you have to do is to step out of your comfort zone and simply start speaking the language: that’s the most effective way to learn it. You'll be amazed at how quickly your language skills improve.
2. Be careful with pronunciation. A clear pronunciation is important if you really want to improve your level of English. Listen and repeat new words in English.
3. Widen your vocabulary. When you learn a new word or an idiomatic expression, try to use it immediately. Keep a notebook with idiomatic expressions, new words, phrasal verbs and write down a short sentence for each new way of saying.
4. Listen to English radio or podcasts to improve your listening abilities as well as watch English movies with English subtitles. It's enough to do one of these activities 15 minutes a day. Do it as a daily training activity and you’ll be amazed how you improve your skills.
5. Reading is another fundamental activity. If you are alone, it could also be important to read aloud.
6. Writing is essential. Keep a sort of diary in English. Writing helps you revise grammar and spelling.
