Beyond Lighting - Tips & Tricks to help look your best on your next video call

Beyond Lighting - Tips & Tricks to help look your best on your next video call

I know many of you are spending your days working from home and this includes being on numerous Zoom, Google Meets and FaceTime calls.

Below are similar tips I provide my clients when they’re preparing for a headshot session with me:

Flattering Lighting:  Use a window as your lighting source. Face your computer straight on for the best results. Ideally there will be a curtain or means to diffuse the natural light. Always avoid backlight, overhead and side light as they often create unflattering shadows.

Camera Angle:  Angle your laptop so the camera is slighting above your eye level. You can use books, a small bin, etc. to elevate your computer. Always remain centered in the frame.

Backdrop:  Ideally keep the backdrop simple with minimal clutter behind you. Neutral tones are also most flattering.

Wardrobe:  Jewel tones always look fantastic on camera. I also like navy. I don’t recommend wearing all white or black and also avoid busy patterns. Wear a top that flatters your figure and has a simple neckline. Keep jewelry to a minimum.

Hair & Makeup:  Even if you don’t typically wear makeup to the office, I recommend you wear enough makeup in a zoom chat to pop your features so you don’t look washed out. This can be as simple as mascara, a hint of blush and kiss of lipstick. To avoid shiny skin, use a simple blotting sheet or translucent powder.

This video by Hot & Flashy provides additional tips on all of the above.

Okay, this is so funny, Sarah! I had a Zoom with a local Congressman in early April and I was very taken aback by how I appeared on camera. Then 3 wks ago I watched the exact same Hot n’ Flashy Youtube video in your post. After that I purchased a photo backdrop along with a selfie ring light with a phone clip on it. Game changer! I felt like my personal and business brand was back on point. Product info below! I encourage everyone to watch the video that is linked in your post. Thanks for mentioning! I concur!
