Experience Space from the comfort of Earth!

Astronomical & Space events for April 2024-

  • April 3: Venus near Neptune. Venus (mag -3.8) will meet Neptune (mag 8.0) in the constellation Pisces. The planets will be clearly visible with a pair of binoculars.
  • April 6: Moon near Mars. the 10%-illuminated Moon will be close to Mars (mag 1.2). Both objects will be in the constellation Aries. Observe them with the naked eye.
  • April 6: Moon near Saturn; lunar occultation of Saturn. the 10%-illuminated Moon will be close to Saturn (mag 1.1). Both objects will be in the constellation Aquarius. Observe them with the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars. If you happen to be in Antarctica, you might also see the lunar occultation of Saturn.
  • April 8 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 18:22 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.
  • April 8 - Total Solar Eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the Sun, revealing the Sun's beautiful outer atmosphere known as the corona. This is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime event for viewers in the United States. The last total solar eclipse visible in the continental United States occurred in 2017 and the next one will not take place until 2045. The path of totality will begin in the Pacific Ocean and move across parts of Mexico and the eastern United States and Nova Scotia. The total eclipse will be visible in parts of Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinoiss, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. (NASA Map and Eclipse Information) (NASA Interactive Google Map)
  • April 9- Vostochny Angara Test Flight (Roscosmos)- First test launch of the Angara A5 launch vehicle from the Vostochny Cosmodrome. The mission will not carry payloads and the rocket will carry an upper stage called "Orion" which could be very similar to the Persey stage.
  • April 10: Saturn near Mars. Saturn (mag 1.1) will meet Mars (mag 1.2) in the constellation Aquarius. The planets will be clearly visible to the naked eye, but you can also observe them closer with a telescope or a pair of binoculars.
  • April 21: comet 12P/Pons–Brooks reaches its brightest.  Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks will reach its perihelion, the closest point to the Sun. By that time, it is expected to become visible to the naked eye (its magnitude will rise to 4.2). Soon after the perihelion, the comet will disappear from the Northern Hemisphere’s night sky. In the Southern Hemisphere, it will remain visible until the end of the year.
  • April 21: Jupiter near Uranus. Jupiter (mag -2.0) will meet Uranus (mag 5.8) in the constellation Aries. You can observe them with a pair of binoculars.
  • April 22, 23 - Lyrids Meteor Shower. The Lyrids is an average shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered in 1861. The shower runs annually from April 16-25. It peaks this year on the night of the night of the 22nd and morning of the 23rd. These meteors can sometimes produce bright dust trails that last for several seconds. Unfortunately the glare of the full moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year. But if you are patient, you may still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Lyra, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
  • April 23 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 23:50 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Pink Moon because it marked the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the first spring flowers. This moon has also been known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Growing Moon, and the Egg Moon. Many coastal tribes called it the Fish Moon because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
  • April 25: Shenzhou 18 Launch (CASC- China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation)- Shenzhou 18 (Chinese: 神州十八号), the flight will mark the 13th crewed Chinese spaceflight and the eighteenth flight of the Shenzhou program. The spacecraft will carry three People's Liberation Army Astronaut Corps (PLAAC) taikonauts on the seventh flight to the Tianhe core module, the first module of the Tiangong space station.
  • April 29: Mars near Neptune. Mars (mag 1.1) will meet Neptune (mag 7.9) in the constellation Pisces. You can observe them with a telescope or a pair of binoculars.
  • Possible April 2024 space launches- Virgin Galactic Suborbital (Galactic-07), SpaceX (Falcon 9 Block 5 | WorldView Legion 1 & 2, Falcon 9 Block 5 | Galileo FOC FM25-FM26, Falcon 9 Block 5 | USSF-62/WSF-M 1)

Beyonder of the Month

"Anyone who goes to space tries to look at his own country first, but soon it appears that there is no boundary between the countries and the entire world is one family where our destinies are integrated."

~ The First Indian Astronaut in Space- Astronaut Rakesh Sharma

Astronaut Rakesh Sharma is an iconic figure in the history of Indian space exploration. Born on January 13, 1949, Sharma made history as the first Indian citizen to journey into space. He achieved this feat aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft on April 2, 1984, as part of the Soviet Interkosmos program.

Sharma, a former pilot in the Indian Air Force, was selected for the space mission from a pool of Indian Air Force test pilots. His journey into space lasted for eight days, during which he conducted various experiments and observations. When then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from space, his memorable response, "Saare Jahan Se Achha" (Better than the entire world), became an indelible part of Indian pride and identity.

Following his return to Earth, Sharma continued to serve in the Indian Air Force and later held several high-ranking positions in the Indian space program, contributing significantly to its development and growth. His historic spaceflight inspired generations of Indians and symbolized the country's aspirations in space exploration.

Rakesh Sharma's legacy extends beyond his pioneering journey into space; he remains a symbol of courage, determination, and scientific achievement, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams in the field of space exploration.
