34 Furthermore Elihu a answered and said,

2  Hear my words, O ye wise men;

And give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

3  b For the ear trieth words,

As the † mouth tasteth meat.

4  c Let us choose to us judgment:

Let us know among ourselves what is good.

5  For Job hath said, d I am righteous:

And e God hath taken away my judgment.

6  f Should I lie against my right?

† My wound is incurable g without transgression.

7  What man is like Job,

h Who drinketh up scorning like water?

8  Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity,

And walketh with wicked men.

9  For i he hath said, It k profiteth a man nothing

That he should delight himself with God.

10  Therefore hearken unto me, ye † men of understanding:

l Far be it from God, m that he should do wickedness;

And from the Almighty, n that he should commit iniquity.

11  o For the work of a man shall he render unto him,

And cause every man to find p according to his ways.

12  Yea, surely God will not do wickedly,

Neither will q the Almighty pervert judgment.

13  Who hath r given him a charge over the earth?

Or s who hath disposed † the whole world?

14  If he t set his heart † upon man,

If he u gather unto himself his v spirit and his breath;

15  All flesh shall u perish together,

And man u w shall turn again unto dust.

16  If now thou hast understanding, x hear this:

Hearken to the voice of my words.

17  y Shall even he that hateth right † govern?

And wilt thou condemn him that is most just?

18  Is it fit z to say to a king, Thou art a wicked?

And to princes, Ye are ungodly?

19  How much less to him that b accepteth not the persons of princes,

Nor regardeth the c rich more than the poor?

For d they all are the work of his hands.

20  e In a moment shall they die,

And the people shall be troubled f at midnight, and pass away:

And † the mighty shall be taken away g without hand.

21  h For his eyes are upon the ways of man,

And he seeth all his i goings.

22  k There is no darkness, nor l shadow of death,

Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

23  For he will not lay upon man more than right;

That he should † enter into judgment with God.

24  He shall ll break in pieces mighty men † without number,

And set m others in their stead.

25  Therefore he knoweth their works,

And he n overturneth them o in the night, so that they are † destroyed.

26  He p striketh them as wicked men

† In the open sight of others;

27  Because they turned back † from him,

And would not q consider any of his ways:

28  So that they r cause the cry of the poor to come unto him,

And s he heareth the cry of the afflicted.

29  When he t giveth quietness, who then can make trouble?

And u when he hideth his face, who then can behold him?

Whether it be done against a nation,

Or against a man only:

30  That the hypocrite reign not,

Lest x the people be ensnared.

31  Surely it is meet to be said unto God,

I y have borne chastisement, I will not z offend any more:

32  a That which I see not teach thou me:

If I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

33  † Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it,

Whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I:

Therefore b speak what thou knowest.

34  Let men † of understanding tell me,

And let a wise man hearken unto me.

35  Job hath spoken c without knowledge,

And his words were without wisdom.

36  || My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end

Because of his answers for wicked men.

37  For he addeth rebellion unto his sin,

He clappeth d his hands among us,

And multiplieth his words against God.1

Revelation From God

Author

The author of the Job in unknown, there are those that believe Moses penned it, or possible Elihu the forth friend of Job. As the language and possible date of the writing leads to Abraham time frame, the author could be Enoch.

Date

The book of Job is one of the earliest known writings, dating to an Abraham time frame. Job’s wealth is measure in live stock as was Abraham, Issac and Jacob. The Hebrew word for Almighty, Shaddai, is used for YHWH throughout the book of Job, which is only otherwise found in Genesis and the Book of Enoch, thus placing the writing in same time frame as Enoch and Genesis.

History

The Book of Job is set in the Abraham time frame as Job's wealth is measured in livestock (Job_1:3; Job_42:12), the same way Abraham and Jacob's wealth are measured (Gen_12:16; Gen_13:2; Gen_30:43; Gen_32:5). (2) The Sabeans and Chaldeans are portrayed as nomadic marauders (Job_1:15, Job_1:17), indicating an early date. (3) The Hebrew word for piece of silver in Job (Job_42:11) is otherwise found only in conjunction with the patriarch Jacob (Gen_33:19; Jos_24:32). (4) Without a priesthood or a sanctuary, Job offered sacrifices to God in a patriarchal fashion (Job_1:5). (5) Job's longevity is consistent with the life spans of the patriarchs (Job_42:16). (6) The preference in the poetic sections of the book for the divine name Shaddai over the divine name Yahweh may indicate a period before the Exodus (Exo_3:14-15). The text indicates that the events of Job occurred in the land of Uz (Job_1:1), but the location of Uz is unknown. That Job was the greatest among the people of the East (Job_1:3) indicates that Job lived east of the Jordan River. Some have concluded that Uz was located in Syria or northwest Mesopotamia. However, most writers think Uz was located near Edom, because many of the proper names in the Book of Job occur in the genealogy of Esau, the father of the Edomites (Gen. 36).1
