Billion Dollar Hand Hygiene Market
On 4th October, with the #ministryofhealth #UNICEFIndonesia launched the #Handhygiene #market #assessment (HHMA) for #Indonesia in the presence of a wide range of stakeholders (face-to-face and online) including #goverment #ministries #developmentpartners #privatesector and #businesses that are part of the #publicprivatepartnerships on #handhygiene in #indonesia.
#COVID19 has demonstrated the enormity of reaching #everyone #everywhere with access to hand hygiene. Since early 2020 significant efforts were made by the #government of #indonesia along with #sector #stakeholders to improve access to hand hygiene services across different settings. #Handhygiene in #schools have seen a marked improvement with 20% increase in hand hygiene access since 2020. Despite such efforts, #demand and #supply side challenges persist limiting access to #handhygiene #products and #services #forall.
The #handhygiene #market #assessment is an attempt to better understand the barriers and craft recommendations to help realize #indonesia's vision of making #handhygiene a #reality #forall by 2030.
The Market assessment estimates the personal hygiene market to be currently worth $800 million in Indonesia and expected to grow to $ 3 billion by 2025.

Liquid soaps/body washes are increasingly preferred over bar soaps and #households source #handhygiene #products mostly at their #neighbourhood #conveniencestore.
There are limited market players offering products in far flung and remote areas and distributors are concentrated in only 2 out of 5 major islands of Indonesia. #lastmiledelivery remains a critical challenge and impacts #handhygiene #behaviour . For example, the population in the rural areas of #papua and #ntt province reported distance to shops and availability of products a key challenge to access that impacted their behaviour.
Regular O & M of #handhygiene #facilities was reported to be a key challenge even in #office spaces (public and private). Limited #innovations in #handhygiene #products and #infrastructure, as current innovation #ecosystems are not very conducive for innovations (product/infrastructure) due to regulatory compliances.
The group work following the launch discussed the study recommendations with a view to develop concrete #actions to address critical supply and #lastmile challenges, and supportive #enablingecosystem to make #handhygiene a reality #forall #Indonesians. In the coming days and weeks, the action plan with clear roles & responsibilities will be finalized. This will be key to the implementation of the #national #handhygiene #roadmpap that will be launched on 17th October as part of #globalhandwashingday commemoration.

2yKannan Nadar fascinating initiative. It would be good to do something like this in some of the bigger economies in Africa - Nigeria where we worked together for instance. I’m also intrigued about doing something similar for household water treatment products? Everyone needs safe water right! There could be potential for companies to combine the two?
