#Biofuels: fuelling a more sustainable mobility

Welcome to “Energy of Today & Tomorrow”: your go-to guide to the challenges and the opportunities of the energy world.

In this issue, we explore the world of biofuels, a cornerstone of sustainable mobility and a key element in our path to Net Zero and the broader energy transition.

What are biofuels?

Biofuels are sustainable fuels produced from biogenic materials such as used cooking oil (UCO), residues and agricultural waste, and they offer a practical, readily available solution for the decarbonisation of the transport sector, including heavy-duty vehicles, aviation, rail and maritime transport.

Innovating energy production: the biorefinery revolution

Our journey into the biofuels sector began a decade ago, with the transformation of traditional refineries into advanced biorefineries, including Venice-Porto Marghera (the first refinery in the world to be converted into a biorefinery in 2014) and Gela (where operations began in 2019). These biorefineries leverage our proprietary Ecofining™ technology, developed in partnership with Honeywell UOP Training , to treat various feedstocks, animal fats and vegetable oils from the agri-food industry and used cooking oils, and produce high-quality biofuels.

From fields to fuel: our agri-feedstock projects

“We are certain that a new path is possible to reduce emissions in the transport sector and we are already walking that path, leveraging innovative solutions like here in Kenya.”

Claudio Descalzi - Chief Executive Officer at Eni

We are constantly exploring ways to improve the sustainability of our biorefineries by developing agri-feedstocks, raw materials obtained from crops grown on abandoned or degraded land not in competition with food production. Starting in 2021, we launched a series of agri-feedstockprojects in Kenya and other countries to ensure a steady supply of raw materials for biofuel production based on circular economy models, while also supportingeconomies and promotingsustainablefarmingpractices, enhancing the livelihoods of localcommunities.

Enilive and HVO: driving the future of mobility

Biofuels are integral to our strategy to meet customer needs and achieve our decarbonisation targets. In line with this commitment, together with Enilive, we offer a diverse range of biofuels, covering everything from production to distribution: among these is HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil), marketed as HVOlution. Derived from 100% renewable sources, HVOlution is already available in over 1,000 Enilive Stations and is ready for use in the latest-generation diesel engines.

Serie A Enilive: fuelling the passion that unites us

Enilive is transforming the way we move, from personal vehicles to heavy-duty transport, connecting people in new and sustainable ways. And what better way to connect people than through football? Enilive is the new title sponsor of Lega Serie A : a partnership that will last until 2027 and underscores our dedication to engaging with the community in meaningful ways.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights in our next issue of “Energy of Today & Tomorrow.”
