Black History. Black Futures. Black Excellence. Black Joy.

Black History. Black Futures. Black Excellence. Black Joy.

At NerdWallet, we champion diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is seen in our leadership and throughout the company, and it is woven into the work that we do. In fact, we have ERGs (employee resource groups), including NerdWomxn, NerdOut!, NerdParents, and more, to help our Nerds feel connected, even in a remote-first environment. These employee-led groups provide safe spaces and support for women, underrepresented employees, diversified allies, and parents to help foster a diverse, inclusive workplace.

We are proud to present Nerds of Color, a new employee resource group with a mission to attract, support, and retain prospective and current NerdWallet employees from Hispanic, Latino, Black, Native, Hawaiian, Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Pacific Islander communities. Our goal is to build an inclusive culture so our colleagues can bring their whole self to work. From organizing events to promoting equitable opportunities for our communities to cultural education, Nerds of Color provides a space to discuss community issues, shared experiences, and strategic goals.

This February, Nerds of Color is celebrating Black History Month, an annual observance and celebration of African American history, culture, triumphs, and achievements. All month long, we have been recognizing Black accomplishments, insights, and advocating for long-term change by sharing various resources including Black financial podcasts, such as The Clever Girls Know,  and Black-owned businesses, such as BLK & Bold, a specialty coffee company. We have also been sharing hot-off-the-press articles, including our pieces about Black financial influencers to follow, how to start building generational wealth, and our ‘Black and Bossed Up’ Flipboard

Every Monday, we host Unsung Black Heroes - Wealth Edition, where we discuss stories about Black excellence and how folks, such as Madame C.J. Walker and Maggie Lena Walker, grew their wealth. Additionally, we are wrapping up the month with a powerful panel discussion titled Black Journeys to NerdWallet with our very own executives, E Lysonge, Shelby Washington, and Kwame Everett, hosted by writer Elizabeth Ayoola. Our panelists will talk about their careers, experiences, inspirations, and how they celebrate Black achievements beyond Black History Month.

What makes our work so special? We put in the effort to see and hear our team members. From carefully designing our group logo to creating a calendar that ensures we recognize all holidays and celebrations — including Greek-American Heritage Month, Lunar New Year, Financial Literacy Month, and National Hispanic Heritage Month — we truly care about making sure that everyone’s voice is heard. We want to make it a point to not just promote diversity, but to honor it and go beyond what our history books taught us.

Nerds of Color is very excited to continue celebrating cultures not only this year, but for many years to come. We can’t wait to share more about what we are doing in our communities to reinforce the importance of inclusion in our everyday lives. Until then, Turn to the Nerds!
