Bleepr

Bleepr

I asked one of our students, Michael Reen, to write a blurb about his new app, Bleepr, and why he and his partner, Dylan, built it.  Here is what he said...

"My partner Dylan Sirgiovanni and myself are beyond excited to finally introduce our app, Bleepr, to the world.  We built Bleepr for the sole purpose of getting groups of friends (and friends of friends) together faster and easier than ever.  Now that we have partnered with Emoji, you can also choose a venue, get directions and even hail an Uber all right in your group chat!  It may seem like a simple enough app, but the road to our completed product was scary and unpredictable.  Let’s jump back to a year to get the whole story...

Dylan and I had just left a B2B marketplace startup that we had cofounded with a group of other childhood friends after we had finished school.  It was a brilliant idea that our friend had come up with, but with it being our first startup, was more of a learning opportunity.  We found ourselves at a pub in downtown Manhattan, drinking away our defeat, and this is where Bleepr was born.  We knew that plenty of friends were in the area, and getting out of work soon, but there was no way to see who was around, let alone get them into a group chat on the fly.

With the idea fresh on our minds, I enrolled in TurnToTech's Mobile Development Boot Camp focusing on iOS.  Programming turned out to be just as hard as I imagined, but we had a great team of teachers helping us out.  We wound up teaming up with TurnToTech to build out the app as I took more of a design lead.  We were the first startup in their brand new tech accelerator, and it has so far been a great experience with awesome people.

Although, it wasn’t all the picture-perfect life of startup founders that you would imagine. Dylan and I don’t come from rich families or Ivy League schools, we met at public high school in Brooklyn, both products of the outer boroughs of NYC.  To get Bleepr off the ground, we shared a one bedroom railroad apartment with one other friend, sleeping on futons.  We spent our free time managing a thai food stand on the weekends and working on freelance projects at night (with some skateboarding in between).  We managed to bootstrap Bleepr so far with just $3,000 dollars, the same way we’ve bootstrapped our lives the past year.  I truly believe this has lead to a more defined and focused product.  When we do raise money, you can be certain not a penny will go to waste.

We really hope you all enjoy our app and make sure to share with friends to get the most out of it!  Also, we’re always looking to link up with fellow entrepreneurs, students or just cool people in general.  Feel free to reach out, my email is mike@bleeprapp.com.  Thanks!"
