Bletchley Park AI summit challenges
I was invited to participate in a vibrant discussion at the Bletchley Park preview webinar on 23 September, thanks to David Wood's thoughtful invitation. Sharing the virtual stage with esteemed panelists like Amitā Kapoor, Kim Solez, Jerome Glenn, Orit Kopel, and Tony Czarnecki was truly enriching. Their diverse perspectives on AI's horizon were illuminating, setting a fertile ground for a meaningful dialogue. Now, allow me to delve into the remarks I presented during this gathering, aimed at preparing the leaders for the upcoming AI Safety Summit at the UK’s Bletchley Park on 1-2 November.
On the esteemed platform provided by the London Futurist group, I, Francisco Cordoba, was given the opportunity to address the looming challenges in the realm of AI, particularly focusing on two core issues: the inherent biases in Large Language Models (LLMs) and the escalating threat of AI-fueled fraud, specifically through Deepfakes and what I term as 'AI Nigerian Princes'.
In the first segment of my discourse, I delved into the mechanics of LLMs, which are trained on existing datasets. The crux of the issue lies in the biased nature of these datasets, which when used to train LLMs, translates into biased outcomes. A stark illustration of this problem was Apple's credit card fiasco a few years back, where male tech entrepreneurs were granted significantly higher credit limits compared to their female counterparts. Despite investigations revealing that the algorithms were performing as designed, it showcased a glaring flaw. The data fed into these algorithms carried societal biases which were then reflected in the credit limits set by the algorithm. To combat this, I suggested a thorough reexamination and retraining of LLMs with more diverse data, taking into account factors such as gender and race, despite the legal and ethical tightrope this suggestion walks on.
Transitioning to the second part of my discussion, I introduced the concept of 'AI Nigerian Princes' - a metaphor for the sophisticated scams made possible through advancements in AI. Deepfakes, for instance, are now being used to create highly convincing fraudulent communications, tricking individuals and corporations into parting with their money. A chilling example is the family who were deceived into believing they were communicating with their daughter, only to be scammed out of $10,000. Corporations are not exempt from this threat; the attack on Retool, a platform utilized by Amazon and Lyft, is a testament to this escalating menace. With the use of AI to clone voices and even grammatical styles, bad actors are elevating the level of deception, making it increasingly challenging to discern real from fake.
In my 2018 book, "Beat the Robots," I explored the profound implications of AI on the future of work. My aim was to shine a light on the impending AI-driven transformations and to prompt a thoughtful dialogue on the evolving professional landscape. Analyzing potential scenarios and changes, I emphasized the need for individuals to adapt, continuously learn, and re-skill to stay ahead of the curve. While I recognized the unparalleled capabilities of AI, I also argued for the enduring value of human touch, creativity, and emotional intelligence. I believe that while AI presents challenges, especially in the realm of employment, it also offers opportunities – if we approach it with foresight and preparation. As we grapple with pressing global problems, it's imperative to understand the AI revolution, not just as a technological phenomenon, but as a shift that will redefine our roles in the workforce and society.
As we venture deeper into the AI epoch, the nefarious use of these technologies is bound to escalate. The question remains - are we prepared to navigate through these murky waters? The urgency to design robust policies and educate the masses on the potential risks associated with AI has never been more paramount. As we inch closer to the reality of more advanced AI systems like GPT-5 or even the realm of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the stakes get higher, and the waters murkier. Hence, the clarion call to action is to foster a culture of reasoning transparency and ethical AI practices, ensuring a safer voyage through the uncharted waters of AI.

1. Education and Awareness: As I suggested in the webinar, there is an urgent need to educate people, from students to professionals, about the risks and rewards of AI.
2. Transparent Algorithms: Developers must ensure that their algorithms are transparent, interpretable, and regularly audited for biases.
3. Robust Policies and Regulations: As AI technologies advance, our policies and regulations must keep pace. We should have stringent guidelines in place to detect and penalize misuse promptly.
In conclusion, while the advancements in AI hold incredible potential for humanity, it is imperative to use them responsibly, ensuring they are tools for collective betterment, not instruments of deceit or bias.
