Highlighting BLK in Health Members @ HLTH 2024

Dr. Tonychris Nnaka

We are excited to highlight BLK in HLTH member, Dr. Tonychris Naka, who currently serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Naka was a speaker at the “Nurses@HLTH: Virtual Nursing Aiding Workforce Challenges” session at HLTH, which focused on how virtual nursing programs can help to enhance the workplace environment and reduce workforce shortages.

Dr. Naka, whose research centers around enhancing the health outcomes of ethnic minority populations, discussed how virtual nursing should go beyond addressing shortage problems and work to “increase access to communities who conventionally might not have that level of quality.” Therefore, like many innovative projects, virtual nursing can be utilized as a healthcare solution that helps to inch us closer to advancing equity for underserved communities. We are grateful for Dr. Naka, who is using his expertise to provide education on important aspects of nursing!

Akiera Gilbert

We are also delighted to spotlight member,Akiera Gilbert, who currently serves as the CEO ofProject Health. Akiera was a speaker at the “We The Kids are Not Alright” session, which focused on the U.S. mental health crisis that has been impacting children and teens in recent years.

As a leader in the youth mental health space, Akiera explained how Project Health is paving the way for mental health support in the U.S. by offering“free treatment, therapy, and peer support to people with eating disorders across the country.” By tackling barriers, such as cost and insurance coverage, struggling youth are able to have increased access to care. Akiera affirmed that this is the case because Project Health promises“to be there for them to catch them when they fall.”We want to thank Akiera for sharing profound insights on improving the mental health of U.S. children and teens today!

Dr. Monique Gary

We are also happy to showcase Dr. Monique Gary, who currently serves as a Breast Surgical Oncologist and Chief Medical Officer at Bexa. Dr. Gary was a speaker at “The Prevention Tech” session, where panelists discussed how innovation is playing a vital role in disease prevention. In this exciting conversation, Dr. Gary underscored the importance of leveraging innovation as a means to promote early prevention. She stated that as a breast surgeon, she observes how patients are often confused, unsure, and concerned about screening and other preventive care measures. She also noted that there are many gaps in care that aren’t being resolved, which has shifted care away from being preventive.

Nonetheless, Dr. Gary expressed optimism about the future of care by encouraging attendees that “there is capacity and room for innovation and I’d like us to beat that drum.” We thank Dr. Gary for contributing to this important discussion through her vantage point as a healthcare provider!
