Blog Roundup #55 | Abby Epplett, Historian
I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving filled with plenty of food and time with family and friends! Over on the blog, Abby Epplett, Historian, life is equally enjoyable. For this week's roundup, I continue with my five-day Cape Cod adventure from August 2024 and add two new installments to my ongoing Lord of the Rings themed essay series. This is my penultimate newsletter before I take a winter holiday break.
Cape Cod Adventure
This building and its working carillon is an incredible example of avant-garde architecture built by a recently defunct company.
Run by the Sandwich Historical Society, the museum preserves the history of glassmaking on Cape Cod, highlights the work of modern artists, and teaches members of the public how to create glass art.
Owned and maintained by the town of Sandwich, this short and high quality tour explored a restored and working 17th century mill.
Lord of the Rings: The Animated Musical
On November 23 and 24, academics from around the world united online to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Christopher Tolkien, executor to the will of his father, J.R.R. Tolkien and founding father of Tolkien studies.
In the first of three parts, I describe the Valar, who were a combination of archangels and major gods that appeared in Tolkien's Legendarium. They bore a strong resemblance to pantheons from mythologies of western Europe and across the globe. Tolkien's Catholic faith also played a significant role in their depiction. With fifteen Valar in all, I will cover five each week, including illustrations of them and their households.
