Door automation is a means of triggering a door to open electro-mechanically. There are many different types of automatic doors. Each type is best suited to different doors, buildings, and environments. We think for swing doors, push-and-pull automation is brilliant. And not just because we make DIGIWAY operators for them!
Types of automatic doors
The most common automatic doors that people come across are swing doors, sliding doors, and revolving doors.
Revolving doors are often seen in the front of hotel lobbies. They consist of multiple door leaves connected at and revolving around a central point. Sliding doors are common at the front of supermarkets and retail stores. They are usually double doors which slide apart to allow access. Swing doors are a fancy way of describing your bog standard door. It’s one door leaf, connected to the frame along one of the long edges, and it swings back and forth to allow access.
Uses of door automation
Automatic doors make buildings more accessible for everyone. They are installed in different places for different reasons, but traffic mobility and accessibility are the most frequently occurring reasons. For people in wheelchairs, elderly people, people pushing prams or carrying heavy loads, automatic doors make things easier.
In some locations, such as hospitals, care homes, or laboratories, door automation is used to maintain hygiene best practices. Doors are physical surfaces that lots of people touch on the way through. Automating them contributes to reducing the risk of contamination through physical touch.

Sliding and revolving doors can’t go just anywhere
Not every doorway works with every type of automatic door. A revolving door can’t be put just anywhere. And it’s the same for sliding doors. They require a lot more space on and around the door to be installed. As a result, the installation itself can be much more disruptive and invasive to get all the parts of the mechanism in place correctly. Remember, for sliding doors, you need not only the space for the door leaf itself, but also the same space at the side of the door for the leaf to slide into. Not every doorway will have that kind of wall space available

Automated swing doors are much less demanding
However, automated swing doors aren’t nearly as demanding. Very often, the door doesn’t need to be replaced. The swing door operator just pushes or pulls the existing door open and closed. The installation requires some space above the door for the operator, and some space at the top of the door for the push or pull arm, as well as safety sensors. But overall, they require significantly less real estate around the doorway for successful automation.
The simpler installation means it’ll cost less, require less work, and take less time. You’ll have a fully functioning automated doorway in no time! With larger projects like double sliding doors, it can be a big job and could put your door out of action during the installation – which might be very inconvenient.
