And the blood runs through it - chapter 4

Denny Heart watched as 6 officers, from each division, got out of their cars. He was about to say something when a big, burly, man started for the crime scene. Denny stepped in his way to stop the officer. For a moment it didn’t look like the Sheriff was going to stop but finally did.

“Get out of the way.” The Sheriff said.

Denny looked at the man’s badge before answering. “That would be a no, Robertson. You need to stand down until you find out why you are here.” Denny knew this would not be enough. Though he had never met the man he did know about his reputation.

“I don’t know who you think you are but as senior here I am telling you to get out of my way. Now!” Robertson said as he tried to get past Denny.

“There are several things you need to know before you keep this stupidity up.” Denny replied as he shoved the sheriff backwards. The man drew his gun but Denny ignored it as he flipped the top of his shorts to reveal a Ranger badge with a New York stamp on it. Turning to Anthony but speaking to the sheriff he said. “I may not work for the sheriff’s department any more but that does not mean I have stopped with law enforcement. As you can see I am a Ranger authorized to operate here in New York. I have jurisdiction and seniority since I out rank you. This is my crime scene. Period.”

Robertson glared at Denny and tried to get past him. Denny put his left hand on the man’s front and knocked him to the ground with his right. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the other’s pull their weapons. Denny ignored them and picked the sheriff off the ground. “Do that again and you will get the same results.”

Robertson glared at Denny until he realized Denny had his gun. He figured this out as Denny threw the gun into the crick. “You do realize you just assaulted a police officer.”

“What part of ‘this is my crime scene’ do you not understand’?” Denny pointed behind him. “First do you see the two women. They both have cells recording everything that is happening here. The man with them is sending complete info packets to each of your respective precincts as well as to mine. Along with them he is sending the same info to 3 lawyers, located in three different states, who have no clue about the other. Also receiving this are three trusted data safe houses who have more than enough clearance for what they are getting. You will never know their location. Now I will tell you the reason why you are here.”

“And that is?” Robertson asked.

Denny pointed to Anthony. “You are to arrest that man for interfering with an on going investigation.”

“Why? What did he do to interfere with what you are doing?” Robertson asked.

“If you check the blotter you will find he was dispatched here, and was asked for intentionally, at least five minutes before this happened. What I want to know is why? And why him? Seems to me that the person who reported this on the tip line might have something to do with this murder.” Denny walked over to Anthony and, without warning, grabbed hold of him. Spun Anthony around and within seconds had him cuffed. Once this was done he dragged Anthony over to Robertson and threw him at Robertson’s feet. “Now get him out of here. And Anthony if I see you back on duty before I get to your boss it will not go well for anyone who let you go. Which means, Robertson, you will make sure he is locked up and take possession of the key before you leave the station. Any questions?”

When none was forthcoming Denny was on his way to stand guard over the crime scene but stopped when a car pulled in. To his satisfaction it was the forensics team. Out of the passenger side, of the car, came a familiar face.

Terrence, TT, Trent looked up to see why there were so many police cars and what was going on. Then he saw Denny. What he also saw was Anthony being taken away in cuffs. Trent smiled at this. All he could think about was ‘about time.’ “Denny…”

Denny shook Trent’s hand. “Been awhile, how have you been?”

“Way too long since last we spoke. Doing great, so is Michelle and the boys. You?”

“Better than the last time we talked. He pointed to a dark haired woman. Found my other half finally. No kids yet but soon.” Denny stared at Samantha before saying. “Samantha?”

Samantha turned at the sound of her name and went to join Denny. Suddenly he kissed her very hard. Then said. “Samantha this is my best friend Terrence. Terrence this is my wife, of two years, Samantha.”

Samantha couldn’t help but hear the pride, in Denny’s voice, as he told Terrence about her. She could feel herself blushing. “So good to meet the person he has always been talking about ever since we first met.”

Terrence took Samantha’s hand, kissed it lightly, before saying. “You definitely look like what he has always told me you would. It is so good to meet you.”

Turning to Denny he started moving to the circle of stones. “See you been hard at work.”

Denny was about to answer when he realized there were still too many people around. “Wait here he told Terrence.”

Quickly he moved to where the six police cars were still parked. He went straight for Robertson. As soon as he was close enough Denny grabbed him, spun him around, then cuffed him. When another officer started toward Denny he pulled his gun and pointed it at the new threat. “You seriously need to think very carefully of what you are about to do. I have little patience as it is so there is no room for error. And you might want to think about this too. I have no problem with shooting you if you continue to interfere with my case.”

Denny turned to Robertson. “You are under arrest. What part of taking Anthony to jail did you not understand?”

“Listen up people… (Denny looked at the other officers) I have no problem with arresting all of you. None. Also a team of my men are on their way. If they have to waste time taking you to jail I will be very pissed. So last time I am going to say this. I want both of these men taken to jail and left there until I can contact your superior. Don’t make me repeat myself.”

For a moment he waited before yelling. “NOW!!!!”

Then there was action such they were gone in five minutes. After they were gone he went back over to join Terrence and Samantha. Looking at Terrence he pulled him over to a section, of the circle, train bridge side. “There are two piles of dust. Need you to pay special attention to them. What I want to know is if it contains human DNA.”

Terrence looked at his friend for a moment. “Not a problem, will handle it myself till I get the results.”

Denny nodded and started to turn away when he was stopped by Terrence’s hand on his shoulder. “Great with Tony…what are you going to do now?”

Denny smiled. “What I was on my way here to do in the first place.”

Terrence waited. “And that is?”

“Go swimming.”

“That’s not what I meant…” Before Terrence could say anything more Denny held up his hand.

“I know what you meant. Right now I can’t answer it because I have to think about what my next move is going to be. Have some ideas but need to take a nice, long, swim to allow my thoughts to wander where they will.”

Terrence smiled. He knew what Denny was talking about. It was not very good, for anyone he was after, when Denny let his mind wander. Almost like Sherlock Holmes playing his violin. It wasn’t about how bad the playing was, it was about the idea it was a time of contemplation. Letting the mind wander where it will. “So if I need you you will be swimming right here? For how long?”

Denny looked over at Samantha, smiled before saying. “As long as it takes.”
