Bloomberg on International School Racism

Bloomberg on International School Racism

A great article from Bloomberg is linked below; may upset some, while getting nods of approval from many others. Where will your perspective land?

Although I have been fortunate enough to be at some great schools, including my current one (IGBIS in Malaysia), I have seen each of the negative elements in this article at one point or another during my +20 years in international education.

We can do our part as school leaders to move from anti-discrimination to pro-diversity stances in our hiring practices for example, or emulate the great work done by UNIS in Hanoi to address hiring inequity, but if we really want to make a dent in this problem, we're going to have to create more momentum in questioning our HR practices as Proserpina Dhlamini-Fisher provocatively calls on us to do. The hardest part may be having courageous conversations and pushing back against what many boards and fee-payers may see as a fundamental part of what their service and money goes towards in international schools; white faces and western accents.

I think it's time to be more courageous.

Please comment below with examples of good practice in promoting hiring diversity in international schools and/or challenges that need solutions related to combating this situation.
