The Blueprint for a Better You in 2025
It's January 2026. You're looking back on 2025, and you're proud! You can't believe what you've achieved. You feel fulfilled, grateful, and hopeful.
Isn’t that where you want to be in a year from now? Let’s talk about what it takes to get there.
🧠 Mindset shift
First, you need to realize that it's up to you. There are many external factors—the world isn't perfect and is often unfair—but the only thing you can control is yourself: your behavior, actions, and mindset. Great! Now you know what to focus on—not other people, not complaints, but what YOU can do and who YOU need to become.
I'm asking you to focus on the process, not just the outcome. Results depend on many things outside your control. You can do everything right and still fall short of a particular goal due to external circumstances. But you'll know you're on the right path because you're becoming the person you want to be, establishing habits, mindsets, and practices that benefit you. Why am I telling you this? Because in your goals for 2025, it's not enough to just list how much money you want to earn, how many new clients or followers you want, or how far you want to run. You need to set goals about who are you becoming - what you do regularly, what kind of mindset and behaviors you practice.
🛣️ Path towards New You in 2025
1️⃣ Reflect on your previous year
Before setting your goals, look back at what served you well and what didn't in the previous year. Understanding your wins and losses reveals patterns that can guide you toward better strategies in 2025. Learn more about how to use self-reflection as a superpower in one of our previous issues: HERE
2️⃣ Set the goals
Write down what you want to achieve, both professionally and personally. Research says that you're 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Think about who you want to become—this is the most powerful, long-lasting goal you can set, yet people rarely do it! Which key habits, behaviors, and mindsets do you want to develop or transform? (Example: one of my personal goals is to become a calmer, less reactive person). Keep in mind that Democratic Leaders set goals that uplift those around them and make the world better. Don't be afraid to think big.
3️⃣ Prioritize
Got your list? Now it's time to narrow it down. If you have too many goals, you have no goals. Limit yourself to 5 goals max! Ask yourself: What would make the biggest impact? Will achieving this goal help me reach other goals? What are the consequences if I postpone or neglect this goal? What do I truly care about? Your goals are only as strong as how much you care about them! Worthy, meaningful goals that you care about will make the necessary struggles more manageable and meaningful.
4️⃣ Make them measurable
Vague goals ("I want to be healthier") are tough to track. Define what success looks like (e.g., "Run 3 miles, 3 times a week"). What you measure is what gets done! For behavioral goals that are harder to quantify, define what you want people to notice about you (”I want my wife to notice that I am much calmer by the end of this year”).
5️⃣ Translate them into actionable tasks, habits & into who you are
Break your goal into daily or weekly tasks. This will make you be very specific, and help you form new habits that you need to reach your goal. Your goal will become more real. Your to-do list, calendar, and habits must reflect your goals.
Task 1: sign up for a running group
Task 2: buy new running sneakers
Task 3: mark time on your calendar for your daily 30 min runs for the next 3 months
When you translate your goals into habits, they start becoming a part of your identity, they stick and create an even bigger impact. It's not just about running 9 miles a week or finishing a marathon—it's about becoming a runner. You are what you do on a regular basis. We will cover the topic of habits in our next issue.
6️⃣ Read them each day
When I plan my day/week, I read my goals to see how my plan reflects them. This helps me ensure my time commitments and actions align with my goals. Simple as that—5 minutes a day.
7️⃣ Track your progress
Measurable goals are easy to track. Are you running 3 miles 3 times a week? Is your number of followers rising fast enough? Once a week honestly reflect on your progress. Pick a day/time and mark it on your calendar. If something isn't progressing, think about a new strategy. If your goal is more behavioral, talk to people who spend time with you what changes they notice. Reflect on what you noticed last week: If you want to be calmer, think about situations when you felt triggered or anxious. Why? How did you react? Did you notice any improvement?
🤔 What are you ready to sacrifice?
Goal setting is easy. Following through is hard. Why? It's easy to say you want a gold medal, but are you willing to train like an Olympian? Are you ready to accept the lifestyle that comes with that goal? What kind of person are you becoming in the process? Reaching goals will require sacrifice. Be ready—and mindful—of what you'll need to give up or invest: time, money, relationships, old habits. To pursue one goal, you might even need to let go of some other goal.
✊ You will fail, but you will not quit!
It's not about whether you fail — it's about not quitting! Having a purposeful goal means you'll keep learning from failures until you succeed. If you want to succeed in the long run, you have to be ready to fail in the short run! Someone said that “success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm”. Learn more about dealing with failure HERE.
🫂 Be kind to yourself
Don’t forget to be kind to yourself on this journey. If you're aiming high and pursuing a worthy goal, it will be hard and challenging—you might even think of quitting. Take care of yourself by practicing self-care as a habit! Learn more HERE.
