The Blueprint to Hydrogen Innovation: Inside ENOWA’s Hydrogen Innovation Development Center (HIDC) with Jay Jayasinghe, Operational Excellence Manager

What would it take for us to achieve a clean energy future?

I’ve often asked myself this question throughout my long career. After over 25 years in the oil and gas sector, I was well aware of the challenges. But I was also well aware of the opportunities.

Learning about Saudi Vision 2030 and what ENOWA was doing in NEOM was a breath of fresh air for someone with my operational experience. I immediately felt that my expertise could be transferred to the renewables industry to contribute to the energy transition.

Here, in NEOM, a clean energy future feels more like a matter of time, not wishful thinking.

Hydrogen: An Untapped Potential

I was particularly attracted to the potential of ENOWA’s Hydrogen Innovation Development Center (HIDC). This visionary project is set to spearhead the future of hydrogen innovation locally and globally through groundbreaking research and projects.

What stood out to me the most about the HIDC wasn’t the project’s ambitious scope—HIDC is set to be the world’s largest hydrogen innovation development facility. It was the sense of urgency driving the entire project.

The minds behind the HIDC understand the need for effective clean energy solutions that can be adopted at scale. That is why the facility is on a mission to accelerate lab-to-market solutions. This means that beyond the research and development, we’re also working on much-needed applications.

The center will be a nucleus for innovation in not just hydrogen production, but also storage, transportation, distribution and end-use applications. Moreover, what we do will help show the world what these sustainable technologies are capable of. It will also help us identify and de-risk hydrogen innovation locally and globally.

This is where ENOWA’s ingenuity comes into play.

A Circular Economy for a Sustainable Future

ENOWA’s answer to the challenges of green hydrogen production lies in adopting a circular economy, with the energy needed to produce green hydrogen coming from NEOM’s abundant solar and wind power.

It is this reliance on NEOM’s renewable resources that drives ENOWA’s circular economy, and it is also my biggest source of inspiration. One of my fundamental beliefs and guiding principles is to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible, and that’s exactly what we’re doing in NEOM.

We’re also working on research to decarbonize transportation industries at the HIDC, with maritime, aviation and other applications. This in turn will reflect on our operations in NEOM and ensure we have a minimal carbon footprint.

These are some examples of how ENOWA is embracing a circular approach to drive green hydrogen innovation. Every milestone at the HIDC will pave the way toward a hydrogen-led clean energy future.

The Road Ahead

The scope of a project as ambitious as the HIDC, covering all aspects of the hydrogen supply chain, means there are challenges along this journey.

We are constantly working to mitigate risks and assess the operational implications so we can stay on schedule and help position Saudi Arabia as a hub for clean energy and green hydrogen production.

Personally, I am always motivated by the diversity of the people I get to work with to bring this groundbreaking project to life. ENOWA has assembled a unique team from across multiple industries that can drive this vision forward. Despite our different backgrounds, we all speak the same language, inspired by a common goal to help usher in a new era of clean and affordable energy.

With every passing day, we’re one step closer to producing green hydrogen at capacity. Once that happens, we can establish a safe and cost-effective supply chain for hydrogen and generate significant economic benefits. In doing so, we’ll also create many jobs.

I’m excited and humbled to be able to work on such a visionary project with my peers of all nationalities. Together, I am hopeful that we can revolutionize the hydrogen and e-fuels industry and make a positive impact extending far beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia.
