Book of the Month, July 2023 The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben
"A tree can only be as strong and the forest that surrounds it" - is the pre-eminent quote from this well know book from a few years book. It has been in the stack for a while and so glad that I read this book. It is the most wonderful -and surprising study of trees and how they live in forests.
The information on how trees communicate with each other, support each other and how trees in forests do much better than an isolated tree is both interesting and informative. The connectivity and interrelationship with other life forms is fascinating. While some of the findings are counterintuitive at first- the more one reads, the more fascinating the discussions are- trees live in interactive communities- they just play out over 100s of years because trees move and age slower than humans- but interestingly follow many similar patterns.
This is a great book if you want to get better connected to nature and the natural world- a lot of what is written in here is both surprising and inspiring- and I strongly suspect you will be looking for an old growth forest to go walking in as soon as you can!! I highly recommend it!
