Book Review: Mic in Tiny Hands: Public Speaking for Children by Dr. S. Anand Reddy
As a book reader, I found Mic in Tiny Hands: Public Speaking for Children by Dr. S. Anand Reddy to be a comprehensive and well-structured guide for fostering public speaking skills in young children. Dr. Anand Reddy combines his vast experience with a deep understanding of child development, making this book an invaluable tool for anyone involved in the education or personal development of children.
The book is divided into chapters that cover all aspects of public speaking, from overcoming fear to using technology, and each chapter is packed with practical advice, exercises, and strategies that can be implemented both at home and in school.
Dr. Anand Reddy starts by discussing why public speaking is crucial for children. I completely agree with the premise that public speaking skills are foundational to a child’s academic and social growth. Early exposure to public speaking not only builds confidence but also enhances a child’s ability to communicate effectively throughout their life.
Dr. Anand Reddy focused on techniques to help children overcome the fear and anxiety that often accompanies public speaking. Dr. Anand Reddy shares personal stories, such as his own experiences showing his son videos of his public appearances, to illustrate how children can gradually become comfortable with speaking in front of others.
The methods outlined are practical and aligned with adult training principles, emphasizing the importance of creating a relaxed and supportive environment. The personal anecdotes make these strategies relatable, which I believe is crucial in making the process of overcoming fear more effective.
Dr. Anand Reddy provides a roadmap for parents to create an encouraging environment where children can freely express themselves. The idea of using storytelling, such as asking children to create narratives based on silly pictures, is a brilliant exercise to ease children into public speaking without the pressure of a formal speech.
It’s a great way to get children comfortable speaking in front of others, and it promotes both creativity and critical thinking.
Dr. Anand Reddy also presented a variety of creative exercises designed to engage children and develop their public speaking skills. Activities like storytelling, role-playing, and presenting in front of a camera are all excellent ways to make public speaking fun and less intimidating.

I particularly liked the idea of role-playing, where children can step into different personas and practice speaking in various contexts. This not only helps them become more comfortable with speaking but also teaches them how to adapt to different audiences, which is an essential skill for any speaker.
Dr. Anand Reddy discusses how using videos and visuals can help children learn more effectively. By showing children examples of successful public speakers or even their own recordings, they can visualize what it takes to be an effective speaker. This chapter is a perfect example of how Dr. Anand Reddy integrates modern technology into the learning process.
In my experience, visual learning is one of the most powerful tools in training, and I believe that focus on using multimedia to teach public speaking is a smart and effective strategy. It aligns well with the way children learn today and helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Dr. Anand Reddy explains how schools can play a pivotal role in fostering public speaking by organizing competitions, book reading clubs, and bringing in guest speakers. This book also highlights the importance of creating a structured yet supportive environment where children can practice and develop their speaking skills.
From my perspective, this book reinforces the idea that public speaking should be part of the school curriculum. Whether through competitions or interactive sessions, schools are crucial in providing children with opportunities to practice and hone their skills.
Dr. Anand Reddy introduces several apps like Speeko and Virtual Speech to help children refine their speaking skills. These apps provide real-time feedback on aspects like pacing and clarity, which can be a valuable tool for practice outside the classroom.
While I believe in the importance of traditional methods, I also see the value in these modern tools. They offer a way for children to get instant feedback and make adjustments on their own, which can accelerate their learning. However, Dr. Anand Reddy rightly points out that these apps should complement, not replace, face-to-face practice.
Dr. Anand Reddy concludes by reiterating that building public speaking skills takes time and consistent effort. He encourages parents and educators to be patient and provide continuous support, emphasizing the importance of practice, feedback, and encouragement.
Overall Assessment:
Mic in Tiny Hands is an exceptional guide for parents, teachers, and trainers. Dr. Anand Reddy’s innovative approach, combined with his practical advice, makes public speaking an accessible and enjoyable skill for children to learn. I found this book to be a treasure trove of useful strategies and ideas that can be easily adapted for children of different ages and learning styles. Whether used in schools or at home, this book provides the tools and insights necessary to help children become confident, capable speakers.
