Brain-based Strategies to a Better You: 'Outsmart Yourself' by Peter M. Vishton

Brain-based Strategies to a Better You: 'Outsmart Yourself' by Peter M. Vishton

This is a course from Great Courses on what we could call 'applied psychology'. This time instead of quotes I just wrote down keywords. The reason being that much of the advice is quite familiar. Even though it's familiar, it didn't feel cliche, for the most part. What I especially liked is that the author brings a wealth of research to light to back up his findings.

My grade of the course: B (using the American grading system) - recommend checking out if the topic is relevant.

Below is the main advice, succinctly, divided into categories. Check the course to hear more about the research or the elaboration of the advice.

Happiness

Smile

Gratitude

Mindfulness and meditation

Nature

Exercise

Practice optimism

Productivity

Start with the hardest task

Sit, don't do anything and think about what you are going to do

Too much motivation can be problematic (choke under pressure)

Don't multitask

Boost happiness

Say don't not can't - how you think matters

Breaking habits

Write down every time you do a bad habit

Eating

Use smaller plates to eat less

Eat slow, take a 20-minute pause after eating some and see if still hungry

If you feel hungry, eat. If you don't feel hungry, don't eat.

Creativity

Boost happiness

Take a walk outside

Do nothing for a little while

Running

New studies show no correlation between how much you run and the health of your knees

Depression

Exercise

Unlearn fear

Relax -> Imagine the thing you fear -> Relax

Talk to people about your fear

Give personal gifts

Say 'because' when trying to persuade

Foot in the door: ask for a small commitment first

Door in the face: bad option as a comparison

Show what they could lose

Credibility, especially highlighted by someone else

Anxiety:

Talk about yourself in a third person

Say 'I'm excited!'

Increase the exposure to the person
