Ottawa, November 8, 2024—Canada Ends Expedited Study Permit Programs, Reaffirms Commitment to Fair Access for International Students

Canada remains committed to ensuring equitable and transparent access to study permits for all international students. Since 2018, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) has facilitated faster processing times for eligible students applying to post-secondary institutions from countries like India, China, Brazil, and several others. A similar initiative, the Nigeria Student Express (NSE), provided a streamlined path for prospective students from Nigeria.

In line with Canada’s ongoing goals to enhance program integrity, reduce student vulnerability, and ensure an inclusive academic environment, the SDS and NSE programs have officially ended as of 2:00 p.m. ET today.

Moving forward, prospective students are encouraged to apply for study permits through Canada’s regular application process. This standard stream accepts Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) as proof of financial support, ensuring that Canada continues to welcome students from around the globe under a unified system that fosters equal opportunities for all.

Next steps for prospective students:

Applications submitted under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) programs before 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024, will continue to be processed through these respective expedited streams. Any study permit applications submitted after this deadline will be processed under Canada’s regular study permit stream.

This transition to the standard application process ensures no disadvantage to students from countries where SDS or NSE was previously available. All applicants, whether previously eligible for SDS or NSE, must meet Canada’s established study permit requirements, ensuring a consistent and fair standard across the board.
