Of course, they don't call it repression. Every new generation of leaders has been trained to hide their feelings and appear unaffected by external events, all in the name of being "Stoic." But let's be honest: repression is not resilience, and numbness is not strength. It's a convenient lie enabling that leader to dodge self-awareness and emotional growth discomfort.
Authentic, transformational leadership isn't about being emotionally cold; it's about understanding how our emotions shape every aspect of our decisions, interactions, and capacity for innovation. It's time to wake up. The most influential leaders aren't those who bury their emotions but those who master them through self-awareness and emotional maturity.
The Emotional Source Code: Understanding Your Emotional Operating System
Whether we know it or not, every leader has an Emotional Source Code—(ESC), a unique blueprint that dictates how you and I perceive meaning, respond to stress, and interact with others.
Understanding your Emotional Source Code (ESC) is not about being confined to a predetermined set of thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. It's about gaining insight into how your past experiences, cultural conditioning, and internalized beliefs have shaped you.
This understanding empowers you to rewrite the scripts that no longer serve you, moving from 'This is just how I am 'to 'This is who I choose to be.'
Who we are acting as is whatever is automatic to our ESC. With awareness, we gain choice! When you choose to repress emotion under the guise of "Stoicism," you're not practicing the philosophy of ancient thinkers; you're operating from a fear-based script that tells you vulnerability equals weakness.
But ask yourself:
Is avoiding your emotions making you stronger, or is it just keeping you safe from change?

Let's clear up a common misconception:
The Stoics didn't advocate for the repression of emotion!
They encouraged understanding emotions, examining them, and transforming the negative into constructive action. Yet, in the corporate world, "Stoicism" has been bastardized into a cold, unfeeling stance that equates self-destructive emotional suppression with resilience.
Can you genuinely and effectively lead others if you're cut off from the emotions that drive human behavior?
Your decisions as a leader are not just rational calculations; your Emotional Source Code profoundly influences them. If you've conditioned yourself to ignore emotions, you're blind to the undercurrents guiding your behaviors and your team's.
Emotions are not the enemy; they are vitally important data.
Emotions inform us about what matters, what threatens our sense of identity, and what aligns or conflicts with our values. Repressing them doesn't eliminate the data; it distorts it, making you reactive rather than responsive.
Real-World Example: Travis Kalanick and the Cost of Denying the Emotional Source Code
Travis Kalanick , the co-founder and former CEO of Uber serves as a cautionary tale of ignoring the Emotional Source Code. Investors forced Mr. Kalanick to resign as chief executive in 2017. Kalanick was known for his aggressive, "win-at-all-costs" mentality, which initially fueled Uber's rapid growth. However, his inability to recognize and address his deeply ingrained emotional patterns—such as his aggressive approach to competition and aversion to vulnerability—contributed to a toxic corporate culture.

Comfort can be a curse when it keeps you from addressing the underlying emotional patterns that hold you back. Ask yourself:
"Are you really being strong, or are you hiding behind the façade of composure?" (You don't have to tell me, but you might want to let yourself know.)
Failure to acknowledge and process emotions inevitably leads to decisions driven by unconscious, unresolved fears, insecurities, and biases.
Repression ultimately leads an individual down a path that may seem to offer relief but is a self-destructive dead end. The cost isn't just personal—it affects the entire organization, leading to a culture of emotional suppression that stifles creativity and innovation, reduces engagement, and drives people to disengage.
Dumb Resilience!
It's time to reclaim what it means to be a genuinely resilient leader:
...as someone who used to be the king of resilience, I can say without hesitation that resilience is dumb!
Let me explain: The theme statement of resilience is "get knocked down seven times, get up eight." Why is that dumb? Because intelligent people, "anti-fragile" people get knocked down, and instead of just springing back up, they stay down and work out why they are on their asses.
The only thing you get to prove by being resilient is that you are committed to "looking" resilient! In other words, resilient people often say, "I'll never do that again," and then do exactly "that" again.
Reconstructing Your Emotional Source Code: The Path to Emotional Mastery
This means stopping yourself from wearing a brave face while ignoring what's beneath the surface. And I know that's not easy because it means digging deep into your Emotional Source Code to understand the scripts you've been running and rewriting them to serve you better. Taking on this personal awareness challenge is the path to Emotional Maturity because emotional maturity is not the absence of emotion; it's the mastery of it.
Satya Nadella and the Power of Emotional Self-Awareness
In 2014, Microsoft struggled due to having a rigid, competitive, "know it all" culture that stifled innovation. Then Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft , exemplifies how embracing emotional self-awareness can transform a leader and an organization. That year, Nadella took the helm and introduced a "growth mindset" of "learn it all," encouraging leaders and employees to seek personal growth and learn from failure.
Satya Nadella's emotional intelligence and self-awareness helped shift Microsoft's culture toward empathy, collaboration, and continuous learning. Nadella's ability to tap into his Emotional Source Code—understanding how his experiences shaped his leadership—allowed him to foster a more inclusive and resilient corporate culture. Let me be clear: Emotional self-awareness is not about indulging every feeling; it's about understanding where those feelings come from and what they are signaling to you. Are they warning you of a threat, or are they indicating an opportunity for growth? When you learn to decode these signals, you transform your Emotional Source Code into a powerful tool for leadership.
Ask yourself:
Are you leading from a place of emotional mastery, or are you simply performing a role that fits someone else's idea of what leadership should look like?
If you continue to suppress emotion, you will never know the depth of the greatness that lies dormant within or your influence's true extent.
The Wake-Up Call: Emotional Maturity Over Emotional Repression
Let's not sugarcoat it:
If you're hiding behind a façade of "Stoicism," you're not protecting yourself—you're limiting yourself.
Emotional suppression is not a long-term strategy for resilience; it's a short-term avoidance tactic that erodes your capacity for authentic leadership.
To lead at the highest possible level, you must integrate your emotional experience with your decision-making processes, not push it away. It's time to stop running the outdated script of emotionless leadership and embrace a model prioritizing emotional maturity, self-awareness, and true resilience.

2moI love this piece Dov. After 40 years of being responsible for strategic change in government, business, 3rd and 4th sectors and communities around the world, I have seen pretty much every type of stoic (they are ALL vulnerable and constantly exposed) leader and every type of org culture that begets the leader. Chicken and egg. I have experienced the 'grrrrrrr' based Enterprise CEO who engaged me because he wanted 'one throat to choke' (mine) and the one who just wanted a hug as I guided him through the trauma of a multi-billion dollar M&A - "I just want us to be fucking happy". So much for encouraging leaders to be messy humans!!!! I have often been told that I lead the leaders. This is impossible. I can't even lead me. One of the joys of being an unmasked autistic chronically anxious love-filled punk anarchist grandad who is confused by life every moment, is that I just don't know how to fake it. Why bother? Leaders should spend some time with followers. Better yet, spend time with the unheard and daunted, the marginalised and isolated. They should spend time re-learning the art of being human and get over worrying about how they 'should' be and just get on with being. It is really fucking simple.

2moDov Baron... The Science of Emotion There is a lot of nonsense about stoicism in leadership. Thank you for helping to dispel some of these dangerous myths. There is also a lot of nonsense on Youtube and elsewhere about living like a stoic in everyday life. The Stoics divided virtue into 4 categories: wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation. Wisdom is subdivided into good sense, good calculation, quick-wittedness, discretion, and resourcefulness. Justice is subdivided into piety, honesty, equity, and fair dealing. Some of the modern peddlers of their version of stoicism advocate being a cold, unemotional person. An approach like that is psychologically unhealthy and makes it hard to form rewarding human relationships.
