Breast Cancer Awareness with Beverly Pisarczyk

Four years ago, I received “the” call. The call no one wants to get - the call where the doctor says,

“You have cancer”.

That call redefined my life in so many ways. It was unexpected, and surprising – even to my breast surgeon. I had been diagnosed with early breast cancer.

Having worked in the oncology space for so many years, I knew how important screenings were. I routinely went for mammograms every year, often followed by an ultrasound due to my breast density. This time the findings were abnormal.

The lesion appeared to be small, so I was given the options of having a biopsy or just observation. Knowing that early detection is so critical, I opted for the biopsy. I had undergone a similar biopsy years earlier, and the results had been negative. Therefore, I wasn’t too concerned with this biopsy – especially since it was presented as an optional choice. Choosing to have that biopsy was probably the best decision I’ve ever made.

The next step in my journey was a lumpectomy. The results from my lumpectomy were the next surprise in my journey. My surgical margins didn't come back clear. Instead, they were determined to be “close”, with the lesion being larger than originally thought and scattered. With this new surprise came another choice.

I was under 50 years old when I was diagnosed and had a family history of breast cancer, which I knew put me at a higher risk level. I opted for the less popular choice of a mastectomy. I felt very comfortable with my decision knowing my chances of recurrence would be less, and I wouldn't have to live with “scanxiety” every year. I also wouldn’t have to endure radiation therapy and hormone therapy.

My journey came with more surprises along the way, and more decisions – including five additional surgeries due to challenges with my breast reconstruction. However, I don’t regret my choices. I know I made the right decisions for me.

Throughout it all, the most important thing I could do for myself was maintain a positive attitude. There were times when that wasn’t easy, but it truly helped me to power through. I knew that it would all be behind me one day.

The best part of my story is that I am cancer-free. I have a fresh outlook on life and have learned to value every moment and cherish every memory.

Screening and early detection saved my life. We all have competing priorities in our busy lives, but our health should always be a priority – whether it be a mammogram, a skin check, a colonoscopy, or other important screening tool – don’t delay your health needs. Make the appointment. Get the tests. Live life to the fullest.
