Bridging the Gap: President University's Response to Indonesia's English Language Education Challenge

Recent reports, including those from Education First (EF), have highlighted a concerning reality in Indonesia's education landscape: a substantial gap in English language proficiency. Ranked 79th out of 113 countries in the 2023 EF English Proficiency Index, Indonesia faces a complex challenge. The disparity is more pronounced between the populous island of Java, where proficiency is higher, and regions like Papua, where it is significantly lower. This proficiency gap, exacerbated by disparities in English education access and quality, presents a significant obstacle in integrating Indonesian talent into the global workforce and academia.

In response to this critical situation, President University (PU) has taken a proactive stance with an innovative approach to English language education, aiming to raise the bar for English proficiency across the board. Their strategic program is multifaceted, addressing the diverse needs of students at various proficiency levels:

Survival English: For beginners, focusing on essential language skills for daily communication lays a foundation for further language development.

Fluency and Speed Development: This program targets enhanced real-time communication capabilities, which are vital for professional and social interactions in a global setting.

Accuracy Development: Concentrating on the nuances of English, this program aims to refine grammatical and linguistic precision in communication.

English for Professional Purposes: This tailors language learning to the specific needs of different industries, bridging academic English and practical language skills required in the workforce.

Academic Writing: Emphasizing the ability to articulate complex ideas and research findings clearly and effectively in written English.

Research Writing: specialized training for higher academia, focusing on writing research papers and theses to international standards.

This comprehensive approach from President University is a beacon of hope and a model for institutions across Indonesia. It showcases the necessity of adapting educational strategies to meet the evolving demands of global communication and collaboration.

By addressing the English proficiency gap, President University is empowering its students with the necessary tools for academic and professional success and contributing significantly to Indonesia’s potential to compete and thrive globally.

Thanks Suresh. Kudos to PU for taking the initiative to implement English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI). After conversing with numerous alumni and students, I am convinced that this policy is effective. Alumni have shared that mastering English not only bolsters confidence in the labor market but also enhancing networking abilities. Ani Pujiastuti Dadang Amir Hamzah Agus Fernando
