A brighter future for all women in the GTA
After beginning her career as a chartered accountant, Michelle Samson-Doel was called back to her family business. At the helm of the industrial bakery, she grew the business through multiple mergers and acquisitions.
Now semi-retired, she lends her expertise to various boards and supports other women in their careers and in her philanthropy.
Michelle says it’s not only hard work and ability that goes into a successful career, but timing and luck play a significant role. That’s why she pays it forward, knowing how support and access to resources can open doors.

“I try to share knowledge and help others progress in their careers and lives,” Michelle says. She believes it’s important for women to help each other and advises them to let go of the desire for perfection, or the idea of being “ready.” Instead, she hopes women give themselves the chance to grow and meet challenges as they come.
It’s also why she is committed to Women United and the community of like-minded, driven women who believe that together, we can have a GTA for all. One that champions diverse perspectives, tackles the interconnected challenges facing our region and provides opportunities for all women to thrive.
When it comes to her hopes for the GTA over the next decade, Michelle wants to see opportunities multiply and reach all women who call this place home.
“I hope the GTA continues to be inclusive and welcoming and that we find ways to help people when they arrive and create opportunities for them to contribute.”
As the region continues to grow, it is essential that there continue to be programs and services that provide all women stability and opportunity through access to housing, education, employment, settlement, financial and other wraparound supports. Which is why Michelle values the work supported by Women United.
“I love their stories,” she says. “Hearing how hard-working women take the support they receive and use it as a catalyst to seize opportunities and succeed is incredibly impressive.”
