Britain's Tesco To Appoint Gerry Murphy As Next Chair

Britain's largest supermarket operator Tesco has appointed Gerry Murphy, current chair at Burberry and Tate & Lyle, as its new chairperson, it said on Saturday. The Irish businessman, who will take up the position on 1 September, replaces John Allan, after he resigned in June, saying claims of inappropriate behaviour levelled against him risked becoming a distraction to the business. Allan, one of Britain's highest-profile corporate names, is often featured in British media commenting on retail and general business matters. He chaired Tesco for about eight years. "I also want to pay tribute to my predecessor, John Allan, whom I have known for many years. John has left Tesco with its business, management and Board in great shape and fit for the future,” Tesco's incoming chair said.

ALDI has confirmed that it will be reducing the retail prices of all its own-brand milk products by an average of 10 cents. This is the second cut to the retail price of milk ALDI has announced in recent weeks. The move is the latest price reduction ALDI has made for its customers, following price cuts on a wide range of products, including on key staples such as milk, bread, and butter. Expanding on the most recent price reduction, Niall O’Connor, group managing director, ALDI Ireland, said, "At ALDI, our commitment to our customers is that we will never be beaten on price. This announcement on milk prices, our second in recent weeks, is yet another illustration of that commitment."

Sainsbury's, Britain's second largest supermarket group, said on Tuesday food inflation was starting to fall as a return to volume growth helped power a 9.8% rise in quarterly underlying sales. The group, which has a 15% share of Britain's grocery market, also maintained guidance for a 2023-24 underlying pretax profit of £640-700 million versus £690 million in 2022-23. Trading conditions in the 16 weeks to 24 June, its first quarter, were dominated by high inflation, which has become a major political issue in Britain as it outstrips pay growth at a time of rising interest rates, putting household budgets under strain.

The Irish Grocers’ Benevolent Fund (IGBF) has announced that its recent annual Fun Run – which took place earlier this month, on Saturday 17 June, at Leopardstown Racecourse – attracted over 1,000 runners. With a 5k and a 10k race, along with a kids’ race, the event attracted runners of ‘diverse’ skill levels. The strategic shift to Leopardstown Racecourse allowed for greater flexibility and maximised funds, directly helping the IGBF charity and its beneficiaries, the group noted.
