The recent reports of engineering professors in Telangana taking on delivery jobs and running roadside stalls highlight a stark reality. With core engineering seats down by over 70% since 2020, this trend underscores the need for a shift in how we approach engineering education to keep it relevant for students and aligned with industry demands. Here’s a closer look at the reasons behind this shift and the actionable steps we can take:

 

Why Has This Happened?

  • Skill Gap: Traditional engineering education often emphasizes rote learning and exam performance over practical skills. This leaves Graduates underprepared for modern industry demands, which prioritize hands-on skills and innovation over test scores.
  • Evolving Job Market: With rapid advancements in AI, data science, and automation, the demand for skills in emerging fields has surged, while interest in traditional branches may be declining.

 

Steps Toward a Future-Ready Education System

  • Adopting Skill-Based Learning: Educational institutions need to move from a marks-centric approach to one focused on practical skill development:

Industry Collaboration: Partnering with industry leaders to co-create a curriculum that matches job market needs can ensure students learn what’s in demand.
Hands-On Learning: Integrating workshops, labs, internships, and real-world projects will help students build the practical skills that employers value.


What Educational Institutions Can Do

  1.  Leverage Government Skill Programs: The Modi government has introduced several initiatives for skill development, which can be utilized through collaboration to align with the New Education Policy, such as:

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): Offering industry-focused skill training for employability.
National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS): Providing financial support for apprenticeships.
Skill Hubs: Schools and institutions can align with government skill hubs and upgraded ITIs, leveraging these resources to deliver hands-on training.
The Credit Guarantee Fund for Skill Development (CGFSSD) is a scheme that provides a credit guarantee for skill loans in India up to ₹7.5 lakh. The National Credit Guarantee Trust Company (NCGTC) administers the CGFSSD.
Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana (PM-YUVA): This scheme aims to educate and support aspiring entrepreneurs.
Indian Institute of Skills: The government has opened Indian Institute of Skills across the country.

  1. Faculty Upskilling: Providing faculty with opportunities to train in new technologies and emerging fields ensures they stay relevant and can teach skills students need.
  2. Career Pathways & Guidance: Schools can play a pivotal role by helping students understand industry trends, explore relevant fields, and make informed career choices.
  3. Responsive Curriculum Design: Regularly updating the curriculum to reflect industry trends will help bridge the gap between what students learn and what employers seek.
  4. Implementing the New Education Policy: With a focus on flexibility, practical skills, and interdisciplinary learning, institutions should integrate the New Education Policy’s guidelines to bridge the gap between academia and industry.


The Role of Government Collaboration

While government action alone may not solve the issue, a collaborative approach can bring meaningful change and its support can make a significant impact. With initiatives like the National Skill Development Mission and National Skill Training Institutes, the government has laid a strong foundation. Educational institutions should take full advantage of these programs, integrating them into their curriculum to foster industry-ready skills. Government support could include:

  • Funding Skill Development Programs: Financial support for skill-based learning initiatives can empower institutions to modernize their approach.
  • Encouraging Industry Partnerships: Policies that promote collaboration between educational institutions and industry leaders can make skill-building programs sustainable.
