Navigating the Melbourne Market: A Patchwork of Challenges and Opportunities
As we move out of deep winter (seemingly, at the time of writing) and towards the summer months, many of us are beginning to look towards the second quarter of the financial year – some with enthusiasm, some with trepidation. In my recent conversations with business leaders across Melbourne, it's clear that the market is in a patchy state. Some businesses are holding their ground, while others are feeling the pinch. Certain sectors seem to be navigating the challenges better, but there's no denying that we are continuing to see redundancies across some markets and some employers. At the same time, there are still vacancies in the market, but the pace of hiring has noticeably slowed.
High-performing candidates are becoming increasingly difficult to attract, as they remain comfortable in their current roles – waiting for the ‘storm to pass’ before risking a move. The market isn't as robust as it once was, but it's not in freefall either. As we inch steadily closer to Finals weekend, there's a growing sense that we might have hit the bottom of the downturn. Employers are cautiously optimistic that as we enter the new year, we could see a swell in activity, particularly if interest rate cuts come into play (fingers crossed). For now, it's a time to stay informed, stay connected, and prepare for the opportunities that lie ahead.

The Law of Attraction (in Recruitment): Are You Attractive "Top Talent"? Is your business attractive to Top Talent?
How Attractive Are You?
Attractiveness in recruitment is far more than skin deep. When I talk about being attractive in the recruitment process, I’m not referring to physical appearances or superficial traits. Instead, I’m talking about the broader concept of attractiveness in the recruitment world, which involves a three-way street: candidates, employers, and recruitment companies. Each of these players has a role to play in making themselves appealing to others in the recruitment ecosystem. For candidates, it’s about being the kind of person employers want to hire. For employers, it’s about being the kind of company top talent wants to join. And for recruitment companies, it’s about being the kind of firm that can attract and match the best candidates with the best employers.
