The Build Up – Melbourne’s Monthly Construction & Property Update
As we approach the holiday season and the industry prepares to shut down for the year, the recruitment market remains quieter than previous years (understandably, given mid-2001 to mid-2023 was hyper-busy). While the national unemployment rate remains low, fewer employers in our markets have been actively recruiting during 2024, and many candidates have felt uncertain about job stability. It’s been a slower, more competitive year in recruitment - job vacancies are down, applications are up - yet overall, the recruitment market hasn’t been as bad as some predicted this time, last year.
However, the competition for bone-fide top talent has remained fierce throughout the year. Regardless of the market, the battle for the genuine high performers in the built environment is constant, and whilst a general concern about market conditions can unnerve some, top performers knuckle down and become less open to a move – making it harder to dig (entice) them out of their current role. Employers need to stay sharp in how they attract, engage, and retain these key people who truly add value to their business, particularly as we wait to see how 2025 will shape up.
As we wrap up for the holidays, I want to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and a well-deserved break. This will be our last update until January, and we’ll be back ready to tackle the challenges of the new year. See you in 2025!
