Building An Audience On LinkedIn

Building An Audience On LinkedIn

Back in the day (actually just two years ago), building an audience on LinkedIn was for everyone…even the faint of entrepreneurial hearts.

It was easy. Yes, simple….and also yes, easy.

Why is that?

Because LinkedIn had a rule and that rule was that for every 100 connection requests you sent, your ability to send more stopped until 10% of those accepted the connection.

So if you were sending 100 connection requests within an hour, and 10 people who knew you or of you connected, you could keep going.

I mean I had one colleague that went from brand new LinkedIn account, to over 17k in connections in less than 30-days. That means if she was getting at least a 50% conversion on her requests and was diligent about her methods, she was sending over 1k requests per days…

Oomph…my thumbs are hurting with just the thought of doing 100 requests in one day.

But numbers aside…what does it take today in 2024 to build an AUDIENCE on LinkedIn.

Now mind you, an audience is different than the number of connections. An audience connects, follows, supports, comments, and DMs you. Doesn’t matter if you have 20k connections or even just 10. If you’ve 10 people going to your profile everyday commenting on your posts, you could be beating out those who have 20k in connections (take a look at some of those profiles out there to see what I mean).

So, what does it take to build an audience on LinkedIn? And one that is engaged?

Overall, there is one key ingredient that it takes.

Consistency.

Now consistency can mean many things online. It can mean showing up and posting. It can mean showing up and comment on other posts. It can mean showing up and connecting with new people every day. Or it can mean a combination of all the things social on social media platforms. The key point is to do this – show up and take some sort of action.

The second way to build your audience on LinkedIn is this.

Be social.

Connect with those you can have actual conversations with. I mean, LinkedIn is a professional platform after all, and the rules here are different. Networking is expected. Professionalism is the tone. Charisma is the flavor you want to exude. Get good at having conversations on LinkedIn, whether that’s in the DMs or on people’s posts, or even in LinkedIn groups.

Third way (and there are more ways, but we’ll save that for another article) to build your audience on LinkedIn is a little counterintuitive…

Build out your audience on other platforms.

Yup, that’s the last way. You need to build out on all platforms you’re available on. Email, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, etc. The reason being is that you can build your LinkedIn faster when you’ve built on other platforms. One of my clients has built out millions of followers on other platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and his LinkedIn has grown exponentially this year (over 10k followers in 20 days) without him having to slave away on the platform. All he did was do a post or two enticing is following to come and connect and follow him on LinkedIn. In fact, it put him in front of a larger professional audience and that he didn’t anticipate. It also landed him multiple 6-figures in deals and speaking opportunities since the beginning of 2024!

So, building out your audience can still be easy. You just need get more creative with how you move forward.
