Building Bridges: Empowering the Next Generation of Clinical Pharmacists

As I embarked on my professional journey in Clinical Pharmacy as an MSc. student at UCL , the contrast between practices in the United Kingdom and my home in Kenya became strikingly evident.

My experience in NHS hospitals was not merely an exploration of new clinical environments but a profound revelation of the recognition and integration of Clinical Pharmacy as a vital speciality in patient care.

In the UK, clinical pharmacy is a well-established discipline embraced within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Here, pharmacists have moved beyond the product (medications); they are integral partners in patient management, working collaboratively with physicians and nurses to enhance therapeutic outcomes. This level of appreciation for the pharmacist's role was a refreshing contrast to my experiences back home, where the journey toward recognition and resource allocation for Clinical Pharmacy practice is still ongoing.

Witnessing the respect and reliance placed upon pharmacists in the NHS opened my eyes to the potential of our profession. I observed pharmacists conducting medication reviews, engaging in clinical decision-making, and providing direct patient care—all roles that, while present in Kenya, often lack the same level of institutional support and public acknowledgement.

This experience has sparked a strong commitment within me to bridge the gap in understanding and appreciation of Clinical Pharmacist roles across various contexts. The knowledge I gained in the UK empowers me to advocate for transformative change in my home country, where Clinical Pharmacy practice has immense potential for growth.

Will this journey be easy? I don’t anticipate it will be. Are the realities frustrating? Absolutely. Yet, the core question that has resonated with me since my MSc. is not about disputing or lamenting these daunting challenges but rather focusing on what actionable steps I can take to address them. I am determined to turn these challenges into opportunities for progress.

As I launch my newsletter, I invite you to join me on this journey of discovery and advocacy. Together, we can explore the intricacies of clinical pharmacy practice, share insights from diverse healthcare systems, and work towards enhancing the value of our profession worldwide.
