Building the Habit of Consistency: Insights from My Journey

Introduction: Consistency is a cornerstone of personal and professional growth, yet so many of us struggle to make it a part of our daily lives. Recently, in conversations with my fellow HiEERA program participants, I realized that many of them wanted to understand how I’ve developed my consistency in writing SEVAs (Social Economic Value Addition) and how they could do the same. This led me to reflect on my journey and share actionable insights that could inspire others to build habits rooted in internal motivation.

Identifying the Challenge: During our discussions, it became evident that my peers were seeking ways to cultivate the habit of practice consistently. They were curious about how I had built this habit and why they often struggled to sustain theirs. This moment of realization inspired me to reflect on my own journey and share what has worked for me.

The Key Insight: What I discovered—and what I shared with them—is that consistency doesn’t come from external pressures like weekly targets. It arises when the practice becomes meaningful and is tied to an internal purpose. This shift from external motivation to internal drive was the turning point in my own journey.

Sharing My Journey: I began my reflection by recounting my professional experiences:

  • Starting Point: When I took over the reins of my business in 2009, I realized the importance of building a committed team. Initially, I experimented with hiring professionals and working with friends before deciding to nurture long-serving employees at Rhino Machines.
  • Empretec Program: In 2018, I attended the Empretec program, which gave me tools and frameworks to understand my own behaviors and set personal KPIs and KRAs. This approach replaced traditional motivational sessions and external measures with a more introspective process.
  • Scaling the Practice: In 2019, I extended this methodology to my employees, family, friends, and suppliers, introducing them to the PEC language. By involving stakeholders in this process, I not only practiced for myself but also for the benefit of the team.

The Core Message: Through these experiences, I internalized the practice of reflection and consistency. I realized that if a habit feels useful and meaningful, it will no longer require external validation or pressure. This was the key takeaway I shared with my peers: find your "why." A deeply personal reason makes consistency a natural outcome rather than a forced effort.

Impact and Reflections: The impact of these conversations has been humbling. I’ve been able to provide actionable inputs to peers, helping them explore ways to build their own consistent habits. Seeing them reflect and work toward internalizing their practices has been immensely rewarding.

Call to Action: To all my readers: Have you ever struggled with consistency in practice, whether in personal growth, professional goals, or creative pursuits? Reflect on your reasons for doing what you do. Is your motivation external, or does it stem from within? When you align your habits with your values and purpose, consistency becomes effortless.

I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Let’s start a conversation on how we can all build habits that not only elevate ourselves but also inspire those around us.

Conclusion: Consistency isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey; it’s deeply personal. By sharing my story, I hope to spark reflections that help others find their path to consistent practice. If my journey resonates with you, let’s connect and continue this dialogue.
