The Burnt Meal!
I put the veggies to cook on the gas stove and got distracted by the conversation with a neighbor.
Oops! I remembered!
I left the conversation in between and ran back to the kitchen as soon as I realized a burning smell….
The vegetables had started to stick to the bottom of the pan. My bright red carrots, green peas & turmeric yellow potatoes had turned black from one side.
I quickly turned off the stove!
And then ran to every single person in the house announcing that the food got slightly burnt but they should all eat it, without criticizing it in front of my MIL.
That brought a hard truth to surface!
In that moment, I became aware that even after 21 years of my marriage, I was biased about her being a typical MIL. This was in Kota- where I was visiting my in-laws last month.
Came lunch time and we all stated eating around the table.
Today everyone praised the food more than usual!
(I think a bit too much. They were all trying to help me but realized that none of them (including my FIL) was a good actor.
They were clearly overacting :-)).
My MIL kept eating and then quietly mentioned that if ever it gets burnt the next time, I can immediately put the hot pan in another utensil full of water and things will ease...
I couldn’t help noticing…

On one side there were these terrible actors, trying desperately to hide my mistake, & eating burnt meal as if it was the tastiest they ever had…
And on the other side, there was this experienced woman, who was gifting me some real guidance on how to cope up, should this mess happen again in future…
I felt blessed!
You need all kinds of people in life- cheerleaders, critics and guides!
And as you learn to recognize them, keep away all your biases and go with an open mind.
Actions that you can take:
1- Make a list of all the people who 'support" you in your life. Spend a third of your time with them.
They will cheer you up by being on your side always, no matter what. But if you just have supporters, you can get lost there.
2- Make another list of those who are always available to guide & lift your game up. Spend a third of your time with them.
Their honest & constructive criticism will help you discover your hidden goldmine. They help you look beyond your current paradigm.
3- And the remaining third of your time, spend with the people whose game you can contribute to.
Human beings are born to contribute. So do not deprive yourself of this pleasure.
Are you surrounded by the right mix of people in your life?
