Are you shooting for the Roof or the Moon? How to Set Bold, Transformative Goals
When you are in an annual review senior leadership meeting and every leader gladly shows they have achieved 100% of their objectives, and a few have achieved 120% of their objectives, everyone is happy, right? What could be better than achieving their goals? These are called “Roofshot” goals, which means your organization is setting goals that are achievable. For companies that fear failure, reward people on achieving 100% goals, that might be wonderful. However, organizations like Google, Intel and other big names like this have reached their current heights by shooting for the moon, or by setting “Moonshot” goals - those goals that will help transform your organization.
What are moonshot goals? Well, they are bold, transformative goals, sometimes called “stretch goals” - they may seem impossible or highly unlikely in the short term, but they can bring about radical innovation, disruptive change, and help your organization to explore entirely new possibilities. Sounds exciting, right? Companies that have moonshot goals find they are fostering creativity and innovation, help to inspire long-term vision and sometimes find breakthrough discoveries.
Will you achieve all of your moonshot goals? Probably not. Statistically speaking, moonshot goals are only achieved 60-70% of the time, but that’s okay if they only make up a portion of your overall goals. They should be balanced out by Rooftop Goals - these are the ambitious, but achievable goals that stretch your team beyond their comfort zone while remaining within the realm of possibility.
Why are rooftop goals important? Well, it gets boring to always be in the same place, right? Rooftop goals help us to grow incrementally and exceed our own expectations, motivate our teams, drive continuous improvement and achieve measurable progress. We are still moving forward, but we can see where we started from.
The optimal ratio for most companies is 30/70 between moonshot and rooftop goals, but each company may vary somewhat based on their own ambition and needs. Where do you think your company should be? Let us know if you need help figuring it out - happy to chat through the possibilities!
