Busting the Myth: VUCA Didn’t Kill Strategy – It Revitalized It!
💡 Did VUCA Really Render Strategy Obsolete? Think Again.
In a world of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA), it’s tempting to think strategy is passé. After all, how can you plan for a world that’s constantly shifting? But here’s the truth: VUCA didn’t kill strategy—it made it indispensable.
Let’s explore why this myth is not only misleading but also detrimental to long-term success. By embracing the realities of VUCA, we can refine how we approach strategy—making it a dynamic tool for navigating uncertainty.
The VUCA Myth: A Quick Take
Some argue that in a fast-changing world, traditional strategic planning is futile. The assumption? Plans will inevitably fail. Add in the push for agility, and the narrative shifts to dismissing strategy as outdated.
🚨 Spoiler Alert: This mindset misses the point. Strategy isn’t about rigid plans; it’s about enabling coherent action amid uncertainty.
Key Facts to Redefine Strategy in the VUCA Era
🔹 Fact 1: VUCA Isn’t New Human history has always been shaped by volatile and uncertain events. Think industrial revolutions, economic crises, or technological breakthroughs. The key isn’t to avoid VUCA but to thrive in it—just as our ancestors did.
🔹 Fact 2: Progress Drives Complexity Every leap forward comes with complexity. Take the electric grid: over 150 years of innovation turned a massively intricate system into something as simple as flipping a switch. Strategic thinking helps us make sense of complexity and find paths forward.
🔹 Fact 3: Strategy Is Your Advantage Strategy isn’t about nailing a crystal-ball prediction. Instead, it’s a tool for improving your odds of success. It’s not a static plan but a guiding policy that ensures decisions align with long-term goals.
🔹 Fact 4: Strategy Evolves Rigid strategies fail because they resist adaptation. Fluid, emergent strategies adjust to new information and changing conditions. It’s not about being right from the start—it’s about constantly improving.
How to Develop Effective Guiding Policies
Guiding policies act as the North Star for your organization, offering clarity in chaotic times. Here’s how to create and leverage them:
🔸 Start with Core Values: Your policies should align with your organization's mission and vision, ensuring that every decision reinforces what you stand for. 🔸 Define Priorities: Break down your strategy into actionable themes like innovation, operational efficiency, or customer experience. 🔸 Empower Decision-Making: Guiding policies should provide teams with autonomy while ensuring decisions are cohesive across the organization.
Example: In a VUCA environment, a guiding policy might focus on customer-centric innovation, where teams prioritize user feedback to adapt product offerings in real time.
Exploring Strategic Approaches for a VUCA World
Different scenarios call for different strategies. Here are a few particularly relevant in today’s context:
🔹 Scenario Planning: Envision multiple possible futures and prepare adaptive responses for each. This approach is invaluable in industries with high regulatory or market volatility.
🔹 Blue Ocean Strategy: Rather than competing in saturated markets, this strategy focuses on creating entirely new demand spaces, eliminating competition altogether.
🔹 Adaptive Strategy: Emphasize flexibility by making smaller, iterative decisions. Think of it as testing and learning your way forward instead of committing to a single path.
🔹 Balanced Scorecard: Ensure alignment by translating your high-level strategy into actionable metrics across financial, customer, internal processes, and learning perspectives.
What Does This Mean for You?
For business owners, entrepreneurs, and strategists, the lesson is clear: 👉 Don’t abandon strategy in the face of VUCA—redefine it. A strong, adaptable strategy is your best defense against uncertainty. Think of strategy as your GPS: it recalculates when the road shifts, keeping you on track even when conditions change.
Actionable Takeaways
🔸 Focus on Guiding Policies: Craft strategic principles that guide decision-making rather than rigid plans. 🔸 Adopt Strategic Flexibility: Combine scenario planning and adaptive strategies to stay responsive. 🔸 Align Teams: Use tools like Balanced Scorecards to ensure cohesive action across departments.
“Strategy is not a fixed plan—it’s a framework for navigating uncertainty with confidence.”

2dThank you Adel Eljohani for your different take on VUCA World. Your view that "VUCA Isn’t New" is true. The term originated in the 1980s at the U.S. Army War College to describe the challenges of leading in a post-Cold War world. Even if we go further back, I'd imagine the World was always "VUCA", varying maybe in the degrees of V, U, C and A. Permit me, Adel Eljohani, to say that the thought processes and the tools and techniques too have retained their core structures and what may have, or has, changed is the selection from the 'toolbox' and the application using advanced analytics though never forgetting the 'gut' and the 'inner voice' Finally, as you say, 'Don’t abandon strategy in the face of VUCA—redefine it' Prof Ghemawat's Book dwells and expands your view
