Call to Climate Action - Virtual Hydrogen Summit

We are heading into the year with news which we would all rather not have to face, but coronavirus will be defeated by science and engineering, and we need to carry through with this spirit to solve the even bigger challenge of Climate Change.

I have personally committed to changing my behaviours to do little things to make a difference, and one of these is to build on the 30 Years of experience in Aerospace, Aero Propulsion and Technology for Manufacturing where I have worked with Airbus, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and GKN Aerospace and in each role taken a strategic approach to delivering transformative technologies.

Next week marks my 2021 commitment to moderate the Hydrogen Summit, which the West of England Aerospace Forum are providing the platform and hope to bring a new fresh approach to working across regions, sectors from Government, Local Enterprise Partnerships, Universities, CBI, and Leading Industries to shape a narrative on what we are going to do to make an impact, and accelerate the change required to make zero emissions possible.

Whilst the conversation will be largely about the future, we will address the barriers, and find and discuss solutions - where industry has not had success before with Government we must learn and take a new route to the destiny of a cleaner, greener world for our next generation to build on.

The shape of this summit is largely based on the developing UK Government Commitment to a 10 point Energy and Climate Policy, ' Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution', and Point 2: 'Driving the growth of low carbon hydrogen' which states

Driving the growth of low carbon hydrogen could deliver……

  • support for up to 8,000 jobs by 2030, potentially unlocking up to 100,000 jobs by 2050 in a high hydrogen net zero scenario
  • over £4 billion of private investment in the period up to 2030
  • savings of 41 MtCO2e between 2023 and 2032, or 9% of 2018 UK emissions

The view from the Hydrogen Summit will be to consider the supply side of this, where Green Hydrogen can advance, and what we can do to accelerate this with lower costs of renewables with EDF Energy, and electrolysis with ITM Power. We hope to touch on the concerns and address the safety aspects of this with growing interest in Liquid Hydrogen for Aviation, and Marine. We are considering the roadmaps which Fuel Cell companies, and Gas Turbine Aero Derivative companies believe will be the power transformation vector for Hydrogen.

We will go on to consider the actions the likes of Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN Aerospace are taking in the South West, alongside the actions of the infrastructure, with focus on delivering this to apron of Bristol Airport.

With Hydrogen Wales going to be participating we hope to share the Hydrogen Strategy developed by the Welsh Assembly, and focus on the complimentary capability which can bring value together through collaboration in the regions.

Finally to wrap this up we are expecting pledges of commitment and action, so please do take a moment to register for what will be a focused three days to explore, and more important to decide how you are going to advance the future of our Climate for our children which will be reliant on a number of actions, but our personal commitments are the start of something bigger.

Todays, news of the 28th January 2021 which GKN Aerospace, Intelligent Energy, Aeristech, and Universities of Manchester, Newcastle, and Birmingham shows how we can be positive the South West leading the world on Zero Emissions with H2GEAR.

We look forward to seeing you next week from Tues-Thursday 2-4th February.
