This is not self-promotion but it is important, first, to understand who I am and why I am here. Though I have lived in the UK for the last 20 years, I was raised in NYC and spent my formative years in one of the toughest areas of the US, the South Bronx. I say, proudly, that it was the ghetto (and the birthplace of hip-hop). Press fast forward and I have been the only Black male Group HR Director of a FTSE 100 company. I was the first Black Non-Executive Director of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Directors (CIPD). And, humbly, I have been noted as one of the 30 Most Influential HR Directors in the UK. Today I run a leading culture and inclusion consulting firm. OK, my 'license' is out of the way. Now, what do I want?
I want the HR profession to lead the way in driving business to serve their customer, shareholders/stakeholders and staff to the highest returns for all involved. According to McKinsey, companies that excel in gender and ethnic diversity are 31%+ to outperform their peer group.
I believe, similar to BAME professionals in accounting and law, that it is time for us to come together and create our own professional society focused on supporting and encouraging BAME professionals to enter and excel in the HR profession. I would hope (and am confident) that ultimately we will have sponsorship.
