Camera Confidence Secrets: Master Your Video Presence
I recently had the pleasure of joining Ian Anderson Gray AGAIN on his Confident Live Marketing Podcast to discuss something I'm deeply passionate about: helping people feel more confident on camera.
As someone who knows the pain of a gazillion takes 😳 to get one video right, I understand the journey from video anxiety to video confidence.
The Journey to Video Confidence
During our full discussion we covered my evolution from technical writer to video coach, including my struggles with self-consciousness and perfectionism. I shared how I began my video journey with recording screen-sharing tutorials, then moved on to talking head videos, to my current weekly LinkedIn Live show, "Live With Gillian & Friends."
🗝️ Here's the Key Takeaways:
1. Embrace Imperfection
One of my strongest messages during the podcast was about kicking perfectionism to the curb. There's no need to be perfect – what matters is your progress. You have to be willing to start somewhere, even if your first attempts aren't polished. It's like training for a marathon, you build your video confidence gradually through consistent practice.

2. Be Authentically You
I emphasized the importance of being genuine on camera rather than trying to imitate others. When recording, imagine you're talking to your best friend. Don't switch to "business speak" or "teacher speak" – maintain your natural way of communicating. While you might need slightly more energy for video (what I call "heightened authenticity"), always stay true to yourself.

3. Introverts On Camera
As an introvert myself, I shared how I approach live videos like hosting a party. When you're focused on making your guests feel comfortable and ensuring everyone has a good time, it takes the pressure off yourself. This mindset shift helps bring out your natural personality and builds confidence organically.

4. Start Your Video Journey
I've written books to help guide you through your video journey, but the most important thing I want you to remember is this: you don't have to walk this path alone. Having an accountability partner can make all the difference when taking those first steps into video content creation. Don't be afraid to reach out to friends and ask for feedback. The key message here is simple: you're not alone, and people genuinely want to see you succeed.
Just as every expert started as a beginner, your community is there to support and cheer you on. So take that first step, hit record, and share your voice with the world – there's an entire network of supporters waiting to celebrate your success with you.

Love these tips, Gillian – especially the reminder to kick perfectionism to the curb! Even 20+ years in, I struggle with trying to make everything perfect. But connection trumps perfection every time. The first video might feel awkward, but your audience doesn’t need a polished script—they need you showing up authentically. A simple mindset shift is to treat the camera like a person who already knows, likes, and trusts you. It helps dissolve nerves and brings out a more natural presence.
