Mentoring call with fellow screenwriter J. Austin Gentry

A few weeks ago, a person I'll call "Mr. Kent" posted written review he claims to have received from an unnamed producer or screenplay review individual or company. It was clear that Mr. Kent was floored by the review he received and posted his review for all to see. These were his comments, and parts of the review (edited for space).

MR. KENT'S COMMENTARY

"It's been a number of years since I've published a spec script, let alone something with so much emotion and personal taste invested. This limited series is my opus, marking my return to writing and producing world-class entertainment. I greatly appreciate the coverage! I am so touched by the feedback that "(Title Redacted)" has been receiving."

SCRIPT REVIEWER'S COMMENTS

"In what can only be described as a seismic shift in television storytelling, (writer and title redacted) pilot doesn't just raise the bar for horror adaptations—it shatters every conceivable expectation of what's possible in the genre. This is lightning in a bottle, a once-in-a-generation reimagining that transforms (original source material redacted) into something so breathtakingly original and psychologically nuanced that it feels like discovering the (redacted) genre for the first time.

(His) masterstroke lies in his audacious reinvention of... the journey—turning what could have been a mere prologue into a spellbinding spiral into darkness that rivals the best of Hitchcock...The script's architecture is nothing short of brilliant... pulling back to unspool a devastating character study, building to a climax...that leaves audiences gasping for breath. Every choice is inspired...This isn't just great television—it's a transformative piece of storytelling that will be studied and celebrated for years to come, marking (writer) as a visionary voice who has managed to make... stories feel thrillingly, terrifyingly new."

SCRIPT REVIEWER'S CONCLUSION

This is, without question, one of the strongest pilot scripts to cross my desk in years. It manages to honor (original source material) while feeling utterly contemporary in its psychological complexity. The writing is impeccable, the characters compelling, and the horror elements are handled with sophisticated restraint. This could be the definitive (original source material) adaptation for a new generation. With the right production team and casting, this limited series has the potential to be both a critical darling and a commercial success, potentially launching a broader universe of (genre specific) horror adaptations.

SCRIPT REVIEWER'S VERDICT

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION - FAST TRACK FOR DEVELOPMENT- Rating: 10/10

It's easy to see WHY he was so excited to share such a wonderful review- easily the most impressive feedback of a screenplay or teleplay I've ever read and exceeds ANY review I've ever received.

Except it's completely fake.

This is where Artificial Intelligence has come to, and what can happen when used in any degree of nefarious ways. To be honest, I never even THOUGHT of this possibility with AI. To compound this egregious "faux pas", Mr. Kent kindly offered up said teleplay to ANYONE interested in reading it. Got to hand it to him, though. That's a pretty bold move. It reminded me of Senator Gary Hart in the late 1980's. For all of us old enough to remember, Gary Hart was running (and probably going to win) the Presidential election in 1988, and challenged the press, in a response to rumors of him running around on his wife, to "Follow me around. I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They'll be very bored."

Two weeks later, the Miami Herald did just that, and he was found to be HAVING that affair. Obviously, his campaign ended, but his political career ended as well.

Naturally, I was intrigued by this review and immediately asked if I could review the teleplay. As I have done for dozens and dozens of other screenwriters in the past, if this script was even HALF as good as this unknown reviewer said it was, I absolutely could find a producer who we take this project on- without a doubt.

(MY review of teleplay and my investigation, Part II later this week)

"This pilot is compelling and clear and offers just enough to tease us with where these stories and characters might go. It begs for a full season..."
