Can Someone Really Take Your Confidence Away?
As a Career Coach and LinkedIn Expert, I’ve worked with thousands of people and this past month was different. I heard more than 25% of my clients, mostly men, tell me that they have lost their confidence.
Has this happened to you? When I delved deeper, I asked them when happened to elicit this feeling - they all had a story.
THE ASSUMPTION STORY
The situations revolved around someone else affecting them in some way:
- someone saying something negative about them
- they didn’t get a returned call from someone that they thought they knew and trusted
- not getting considered for a job interview, where they were a great fit
- not getting invited to a meeting, party, or event
- they got an email with incorrect assumptions
- the former boss didn’t write them a recommendation when they said they would
- they were runner up for three jobs

TAKE TIME TO FEEL AND SHARE
The good news is that they could feel and they expressed their feelings out loud. Many people don’t even take time to feel or to address their sadness or discomfort, let alone share it with another human who will listen.
WHAT IS CONFIDENCE?
After I reflected on the “coincidence theme”, I decided to research confidence: defined by Webster’s as the state of feeling certain about the truth of something. A feeling of SELF-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities. Synonyms include SELF-assurance, SELF-confidence, SELF-reliance, belief in oneSELF, faith in oneself, poise, and fortitude.
CONFIDENCE IS ONLY ABOUT YOU
What I found interesting is that this definition doesn’t include what other’s think of you. It only defines what you think of yourself.
CONFIDENCE IS A KEY TO PRODUCTIVITY
As a former Executive at Carlson, in Employee Engagement, we advised Fortune 100 companies on helping employees/employers increase productivity and we found that confidence was one of three key components (significance and passion were the other two).
CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK
We defined the feeling of confidence as having the skills, abilities, competencies, aptitude, proficiencies, capabilities, tools, resources, and education to do the job well.
TIPS TO INCREASE CONFIDENCE
If you’re feeling low in confidence, perhaps you could:
1. gain new skills, take a LinkedIn Learning Course
2. talk to friends that lift you up
3. recall your successful accomplishments, write them down
4. take a course that interests you
5. reflect and journal ideas
6. volunteer for a nonprofit organization that appreciates your talents
7. do something fun that you enjoy with people you enjoy being with
8. think more positive thoughts.
So, I say NO - no one can really take your confidence away. Only you can. Let me know if this helps or if you just want to share your experience with me and others.

P.s. I've been there. Many manufacturers and product designers told me that my Lovitude Soul Paintings were too 'bold and bright', and the colors were out of trend. That didn't stop me. Now, I'm happy to share that my Lovitude images are on tissue boxes and hundreds of other products. I chose to start a new trend! I found a team at MHS Licensing that believed in me as much I believed in myself.
