Can You Guess the Three Most Commonly Asked Questions Recruiters Receive?

Recruiters often hear the same few questions, but did you know that asking the right ones could give you a boost in your job search?

At the Marine Careers Expo, candidates frequently ask: What kind of skills and experience do you look for in the employees you hire? This question is your chance to tailor your pitch and highlight how your unique skill set fits perfectly with the employer’s needs. Whether you're still in school or looking for a career change in your 30's or 40's - don't underestimate your unique set of skills and experiences.  From working with your hands, updating spreadsheets or cooking - these can help influence which job is best suited to you.

Another important question is: What kind of entry-level positions or internships exist within your organization? This helps you understand the opportunities available and how you can position yourself for them.  While our recruiters will help you confirm what you're eligible for, we currently have a list of in demand trades!

Upon completion of the program, participants can choose to continue to serve with the RCN in the Regular or Reserve Force. The Naval Experience Program is also an exceptional way to try out several positions on either the East or West Coast for one year while receiving lodging, food and getting paid a Sailor Third Class salary!

Lastly, Are graduate degrees important in advancing within your organization? Which ones? This question is strategic—whether a degree is required, it shows you’re thinking ahead. The key to standing out is following up with comeback questions that allow you to reframe the conversation in your favour. This is your moment to shine and show recruiters that you’re the perfect fit, not just another applicant. Recruiters will take the time to point you in the right direction. There's now also a fast lane for individuals with a previous degree in specific trades, allowing you to bypass the CFAT and other standard entry requirements. Learn the basics of this new accelerated entry program here.
