Canada an Education Superpower? Aw Shucks!
How Canada became an education superpower by Reuters education correspondent Sean Coughlan recently appeared on BBC News.
We polite, mild-mannered Canadians blush at the thought of Canada as a superpower, but it is a pleasant surprise to learn others see us in those terms. We are, quietly and discreetly, very proud that our students score well in international Science, Mathematics, and Reading tests.
Still, with 30-40% of recent graduates unemployed or underemployed, and nearly one million NEETS (not in education, training or employment), we know we must do more to prepare our youth to transition from school to early success in life and career.
With OECD now adding Global Competencies to PISA testing, this will spur educators, in partnership with employers and community agencies, to also focus on non-academic competencies vital to success beyond school. We're going to do our best to make Canada a superpower in instilling Global Competencies in our students.
