CANADA EXTENDS STREAMLINED IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION POLICY

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a significant extension of its temporary public policy that exempts certain low-risk foreign nationals in Canada from undergoing additional immigration medical examinations. Initially introduced in 2021, the policy has now been extended for another five years, until October 5, 2029.

This streamlined policy has already provided relief to over 286,000 applicants in its first two years, significantly reducing delays and expediting the immigration process for eligible individuals. The exemption applies specifically to those foreign nationals who have completed a medical examination within the last five years and are deemed to pose no risk to public health or safety.

The primary goal of this extension is to enhance the efficiency of application processing while improving the overall client experience. By simplifying this requirement, IRCC aims to alleviate pressure on the system and focus resources on other areas of immigration management. Additionally, this policy allows IRCC to continue working closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada, ensuring public health considerations remain at the forefront of immigration decisions.

The five-year extension will also provide IRCC with further opportunities to assess the operational impact of this streamlined approach and make any necessary adjustments. This is particularly important in ensuring that Canada’s immigration processes remain efficient and responsive to public health needs.
